Network music player

Hi all. Does anyone know of a gadget that will connect to my network with WiFi, stream music off of my network attached storage hard drive (the only ones I can find will stream off the PC but can't 'see' the network storage) and stream internet radio stations as well...?

Thanks Hom3r but the first needs to be attached to a screen-like a telly or PC, the second is a big HDD which can play music stored on it and the third doesn't actually say that it will play off a networked HDD, just from the networked PC.
I need something that is a standalone unit (like a radio) which connects to my network terrabyte HDD and streams music from that as well as radio off the internet.....

I've got a Netgear MP101 (years old now) which connects to the wireless network and then searches for a music server which I've got on my desktop computer.

Not sure what could fit your needs but I think your network will need to have some sort of server software. Although my music server (Twonky - I hated Netgears own) is on the PC I can change the configuration so it serves music from any folder on my network - PC, HDD or laptop.

I think with the 3rd one it depends if the network drive runs slimserver I know there are a few that do.

You might want to check out the wireless section of the whathifi forums too:

One option would be an Archos 605 wifi connected via aux in in a proper stero. If you don't have one, then you can probably get by with an amplified dock. Sound quality won't be mind blowing though. I've checked and it does say it will connect to NAS boxes.

Although if the Squeezebox will connect to NAS then its probably a better solution.

Also you might want to look into an Airport Express router thingy as that streams itunes wirelessly. Maybe you can connect your NAS through itunes on another machine and do it that way.

The squeezebox will do exactly what you want, provided your music resides on a server or compatible NAS device. I've just got one and it's the best bit of kit I've ever bought. Have a look at the reviews on Amazon for more info.

It does look good and NAS access seems to be supported.....

edit: argh!:

Slimserver needs a fairly recent pc and the system will not work with most NAS drives - so if you plan this research carefully.
:(

edit, edit: Just found this on the logitech faq page (regarding the use of squeezebox/NAS/slimserver):
Quote:

In order to access your music files, the Squeezebox must connect to SlimServer, so SlimServer must be running somewhere.
In other words, my PC needs to be on and running slimserver if I want the squeezebox to access my NAS....damn! :(

The best and most elegant solution depends on how you want it set up and used.

If you want the most comprehensive solution, but not the cheapest, you can either build or buy a HTPC (home theatre PC or shuttle PC, etc) and run that. It will be the media hub for music but also means you can display networked movies via the TV as well.

If its all a bit too elaborate, then you can just run an old PC and connect it to an amp or hi-fi via the line out. Any old PIII or Celeron will do. Even better if you can run MCE on it and use a remote.

The most elegant solution would probably be a specialised hi-fi device, like this although you'd need to confirm it does NAS.

Freecom Musicpal. Only £80. Says plays music stored on your pc OR network. I still think you will need some sort of server software somewhere on the network.

That was the one I bought last w/e and then took back 'cos it couldn't find the NAS....thanks for the input though :tu: :)
You would think it would be possible for these little boxes to 'see' the NAS without software running on the PC :(

Re: Network music player

Took me a while, but i've finally found the perfect device:

Logitech Squeezebox Duet multi-room music streamer

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2008/06/22.jpg

Basically, you hook the receiver up to your stereo, install software on your server and use the LCD remote to decide what youy want to listen to.

You can also purchase extra receivers and listen to the same music in different rooms, or different music in different rooms. You can buy extra remotes too.

Of course, if you want to buy one one as a finder's fee to say thanks, I won't turn my nose up at it :)

Re: Network music player

Actually, I found out this doesn't work with NAS, but I have one one thing, almost identical, and DOES play off a NAS.

Sonos Multi Zone Digital Music System

Finder's fee still welcome :)
