Looking to buy a portable air conditioner for my room

Hey everybody, I'm looking to buy a portable air conditioner for my room, and wondered what people could recommend. The one I've looked at doesn't have very good reviews: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produc...uctInformation

Can anyone recommend anything better?

That is not an airconditioner, but an air cooler.

This works by evapouration or water and ice to lower the temparature. This typ0e of this is better than nothing but not that efficient and powerful.

For proper air chillling you will need something much more expensive: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produc...er/1816822.htm or similar. These units are still portable, but you have a host for the hot air to be exhausted out of the window. True air conditioning will also control air humidity as well as temparature, hence myuse of the description air chilling.

What's your budget max.? As stated above air coolers are much cheaper than air-con units.

You could look for a second hand portable air-con unit I guess. I've seen new ones for a few hundred pounds before and I dare say you'd find a few on Ebay and the like. Bit of a risk buying second hand but they'd be a lot better and a lot less hassle than one of those 'cooler' thingies.

Something like this maybe:

They're a lot bigger though.

It takes an awful lot of energy to cool a room. And energy is expensive as we all know.

Whilst in Cyprus I lived in a home owned by a refrigeration expert. He basically turned the whole home into a fridge, using the heat drawn-off to heat water, and the whole thing was solar powered way back in the early 70's!

This is the one we have. It does both chill and dehumidify. has several settings including fan only or two levels of full air-con. I vented it up a disused fireplace to avoid having things stuck out of the window.

8000 BTU pumping capacity, about 2Kw for 700w input.

Seem to be some SH units on Ebay for not too many notes.

Don't need it too often here near the coast but it's been on a few nights this week.

Went for a huge fan in the end. Saleswoman in B&Q said it's an awful lot of work for an air conditioner, as I'd have to have the window open to hang the hose out of for ventilation

Cool, (well not really) all fans do is push air around, and if it's hot air, it's fanned hot air...

It's not terribly arduous to stick a hose out of a window, I wouldn't be without our Air Con when it's like this.

Ours came with some foam rubber blocks and an adaptor to hold the vent in the window without actually having it open. Though a small opening IS needed as our unit is venting air up the chimney and outside air overnight is cooler than air from the rest of the house.
