Do I need a PS3?
 

In the next few months I am seriously thinking about buying a PS3. But I need convincing to.

I currently have a Xbox 360, PS2 and SNES.

I only got a PS2 for Final Fantasy and its the only games I play on it. The SNES is for nostalgia.

I also have a stand alone Blu ray player.

So sell me the PS3 over everything I already got

I'd think it comes down to what games you want to play..

If you have the XBox then why not a PS3 as well if you have the cash?

Need? No. Nobody needs any games console. The very idea that anybody might 'need' such a thing is most likely one of the reasons for all the looting last week. ;)

But if you want one, and can afford it, why not give the cash to Oxfam, carry on playing with what you have, and bask in the warm glow of making someone else's life a bit better?

Just give Oxfam your old clothes and buy the PS3 :D

The trouble with the PS3 is its not backwards compataible and thats was a big weakness when it came to buying a console for a member of the family who had plenty of PS1 and PS2 games which he could not play on a PS3.

If you only play Final Fantasy only 13 Versus and 14 (although that is also on PC) are exclusive to PS3, there's not too much incentive for you to buy one really.

Need? No. Want? Depends on what you play, and what uses you'd have for it.


What kind of games do you like?

Personally, I think it's worth having a PS3 just for the Uncharted games... Easily some of the best of this generation.

its upto you really , i have both slim 360, slim 250gb ps3 , i wouldnt sell either of them, like matt said the ps3 has the uncharted games which are stunning , and of course the ps3 has killzone exclusives, and resistance

As several people have written you don't need any game console but if you like playing games then there are some good titles that are PS3 exclusive like Uncharted series and Heavy Rain for example. Apart from the PS3 exclusives it seems you already have everything PS3 can offer... Except maybe a Blu-ray 3D player if you current standalone player is not capable of playing 3D movies.

Also a 3D tv might go a long way, to the OP I had the 360 before and now have the PS3 and they are both the same the only real upside to PS3 is the fact you don't have to pay for online gaming.

Good point...free online gaming is a big plus

For some reason, I prefer the xbox controller (not sure why, maybe i like big things :D)

So really depends on what you want out of it.

eg I rarely use Blue-ray dvds (almost nil).

You won't NEED a PS3. But you might want to get it in addition to your Xbox and Snes just for leisure.

I had the same problem with this.. It tends to come down to the console Exclusives for me.

I love the Xbox because everything online is just done so much better in my opinion but.. I really wanted to play The Getaway 3. I then sold my PS3 when I found out it was cancelled as I feel the best exclusives belong to Xbox.

Gears of War and Halo alone are in a league above the likes of Uncharted and Heavy Rain.

Yes but they're both shooters. Uncharted is an adventure game, LittleBigPlanet is a platformer, Heavy Rain is a life simulator...

PS3 is better for variety of exclusives but I'd still agree that the 360 is the better console overall and the £40 a year pays for itself over and over.

The original question has been only about PS3 so it doesn't really matter which console is better or has better exclusive. But at the same time PS3 exclusives are one of the few points that could convince a man having 360 to buy also PS3.

In terms of exclusive games the ps3 is way ahead of the xbox

Hmm. Despite having had a 360 long before i also bought a PS3, I'd have to agree with that.

The 360 has had some excellent exclusives (e.g. Gears, Halo, Fable), but I think the PS3 has overtaken it regarding exclusives.

As for the comment about Gears & Halo being in a league above Uncharted... totally different games... However if they had to be compared, I'd say that Uncharted stomped all over Gears, as it looks better and has a far better story, characters, and script, even though one is a shooter & the other is an action-adventure.

What are you on about, i have the first PS3 which i brought the day it came out, and it plays all ps1 and ps2 games so i'd call that backwards compatable

Irrelevant to the OP. You have a launch model. The PS3 has not been backwards compatible for nearly four years now. Unless the OP or anyone else considering buying a PS3 now wanted to buy an extremely old second hand model, the only option is one which is not backwards compatible.

Backwards does not bother me anyway. I have a PS2 which is fully backwards compatible with PS1.

Hmm the exclusives dont really sway it for me except for maybe Heavy Rain

it aint a big deal really is it , my ps2 is sat on the shelf below my ps3 and xbox 360 , its just the matter of flicking a couple of buttons on the remote to play it, i appreciate its nice to have all your games compatible with the ps3 so they look that bit better upscaled into HD with smoothing lol :), like roger said if you really want backwards compatiblity TRY and get hold of a launch ps3 these are so RARE and probably cost £££££, so ask yourself is it really worth it

Uncharted 1 & 2 are easily among the very best games of this generation, on any console, especially no.2 . Uncharted 3 should be even better.

ive played the beta of u3 its very good cant wait too get the full game
