ICYMI: BT free speed increases

Noticed this myself when my backup line went from 55Mb sync to 71.

Existing customers of BT’s 52Mbps (9.5Mbps upload) capable Infinity 1 (FTTC) “fibre broadband” service will be pleased to learn that the ISP has decided to reward them with a free speed boost ‘up to’ 76Mbps (19Mbps upload) and a doubling of their cloud storage, but not everybody will benefit.

Yes it started to be rolled out recently and is due to be completed by November.

Effectively they're upgrading all Infinity 1 customers whose line is capable of more than 55Mb to Infinity 2 free of charge.

This begs the question: What are they going to do for existing Infinity 2 customers?

Can't edit the above but I knew I'd seen the links for BT's site.

Upgrade them to 152Mb down, 29Mb up G.fast most likely. It's only £3.60 including VAT a month more than the 80Mb product at wholesale level and BT are one of the more expensive providers in terms of their ongoing pricing.

This makes sense for a few reasons. It provides Openreach an anchor G.fast tenant, moves some money into the Openreach account and provides an incentive for Sky, TalkTalk, Vodafone, etc, to jump on board with the product, which they may do with more enthusiasm than they did VDSL as they don't have their geriatric ADSL 2+ LLU networks to protect this time around.

Of course they may also decide to pursue FTTP with a partner like CityFibre instead. We'll see.

I agree that appears to be the best way forward but the problem then comes to those Infinity 2 customers not close enough for G.fast.

Then there's the relatively small number already on FTTP paying for Infinity 2 but upgrading those to 152Mb would be relatively easy.

I also find it amusing that the Mods on the BT community site were unaware of these speed increases.

People on Infinity 2 that are too far for G.fast simply get 'moved' on the billing system to Infinity 1 as and when they realise they are overpaying. Milk them in the interim. Nothing problematic :)

The 152Mb FTTP version is the same cost as the G.fast version. The gap between that and the 330/50 product however is huge - over FTTP it's twice the price of G.fast.

Gee, anyone would think the pricing were that way so that BT Retail could plan such upgrades. Surely not? ;)

Openreach are offering a new speed level for FTTP @ 160/10 Mb. No change to the 200Mb service.
