Belkin F5d7230-4 - NTL / Virgin Media Cable Modem
I've had an F5D7230-4 Belkin Wireless G router for some time which routed my STB 4MB connection without a problem.
Yesterday I had a modem installed so I could upgrade to the 10MB package. Ive read several threads on here and elsewhere but still cannot get the router to work. From what I have read, I will struggle to obtain a 10MB connection using this router anyway, but I currently can't get any connection at all. Modem-----PC works fine Modem-----Router------PC Internet Status = No Connection Connection type is Dynamic Have tried with cloned and uncloned MAC address (Virgin website states MAC address do NOT need to be cloned) Modem light & Internet Light on Router flash intermittently and irregularly. Presume while trying to connect. I have followed boot sequence, Modem-----Router------PC. No luck I have reset the Router. No Luck. I have restored Factory Settings on the Router. No Luck I have reinstalled the router. No Luck I can ping the router from the PC. I can switch the cable from the modem out of the router and into the ethernet port on the PC and I'm surfing within seconds without a reboot. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. |

Re: Belkin F5d7230-4 - NTL / Virgin Media Cable Modem
Just a thought. the STB default LAN speed is 10Mb. The stand alone modem default is 100Mb. Possibly worth looking into.

Re: Belkin F5d7230-4 - NTL / Virgin Media Cable Modem
have got virtully the same router - F5D7230UK4, and have no probs with it and my 10meg connection, only thing i had was that when installing the router the other day, was that when it was searching for the connection i had to reboot the modem in order for it to be seen, but other than that no probs.

Tried everything suggested. still no joy.
Belkin are sending me out a new router. Fingers crossed. |
Re: Belkin F5d7230-4 - NTL / Virgin Media Cable Modem
I'm not sure but I'm sorry I have to cover these questions, ya never know.
1) Is the cat5 cable connecting your router to the modem a straight-through or a crossover cable? 2) In the status page, what are the exact values given for DNS address, default gateway, etc? (Referring to the external connection) 3) What is the exact model of your cable modem? 4) Does the router config page register a connection or no connection? 5) Do you have any screenshots? I have odd times with my equipment, but I'm sure I can find a solution for you. |
Re: Belkin F5d7230-4 - NTL / Virgin Media Cable Modem
I'm having exactly the same problems as in the first posting.
I have a new Vista PC and new 10MB cable modem and the above Belkin router. I can't get an internet connection. I've used the wizard to set up the router. I've set it up manually checking the configuration settings with Virgin. I've also tried with another Belkin router and a Netgear one too. It's always the same - no internet connection. I've tried numerous different configuration settings, all to no avail. I did notice in the security log on the router web page the following web log DHCP client: send discover - sent every 5 seconds followed by DHCP client: could not find DHCP daemon to get information The router web page does not report an IP address, so it looks to me like the ISP is not providing an IP address. It gets curiouser too. If I remove the router, then the internet connection is fine. This is true for dynamic IP and DNS resolution as well as static DNS using the IP addresses provided by Virgin. Like the original posting, everything was fine before my upgrade when I had an XP PC, and a 4MB connection through the STB and a working wireless network. So I tried swapping out the Vista PC for the XP PC, which according to Virgin 'should just work. However, I am now unable to get a direct connection to the internet at all from the XP PC. Virgin are now going to investigate, whereas before they were quite happy to say that the modem is ok. To reply to this thread, I've gone back to Vista PC directly connected to the internet which worked fine. Any ideas? TIA |

Re: Belkin F5d7230-4 - NTL / Virgin Media Cable Modem
Hi ayjayoh21, XBrav,
Aj's screenshot looks very familiar... unfortunately. :-( I did manage to get a connection tonight, just once when I changed the cable between the router to the PC from a cat5E to a cat6. However I couldn't get to the Virgin homepage; I timed it out after waiting 5 minutes. I was unable to reproduce this when I recycled the cables. However, from what you say earlier, I can at least rule out Vista as a probable cause. |
Re: Belkin F5d7230-4 - NTL / Virgin Media Cable Modem
I am having a problem similar to this , I have the same router. Have contacted Belkin, I have the 2 meg service and the little blue cable modem.
Recently the router only has the power light on. I have to reset the router to get internet access back. This is happening every day multiple times. I don't know what is causing it. I am going to post my log file from the cable modem if that will help. (I don't need to restart the cable modem ever). Re: Belkin F5d7230-4 - NTL / Virgin Media Cable Modem
This may be an obvious point, have you unplugged the modem from the power, waited 30 seconds, then plugged it back in when switching from the PC connected to the modem, to the Router connected to the modem?
If not, try it. |
Re: Belkin F5d7230-4 - NTL / Virgin Media Cable Modem
right, the fact you have gone from than STB to the stand alone cable modem (NTL250) is usually a good thing.
the fact is, if your supplyed info and that screenshot is right , your cable modem IS conected to the router and given it the WAN IP so again that seems right, the problem must most likely be the IP your PC is useing, is the router DHCP server working and giving out the right IP for the lan. (edit: hmm just noticed the WAN on the picture is blank that is your problem so try the * below) your WAN has got a 80.**.**.** yes?, i seem to remember that IP range usually dedicated to STB's as all the stand alone cable modems iv seen get in the 82.*.*.* (wythenshawe, south manchester) range but its possible i suppose. the IP of the router says 192.168.2.1 yes? does the IP of the PC your using also have the 192.168.2.* range, i assume it does, or you couldnt connect to the router. does the router have a page were you can enter an IP or web url and ping a site?, if so ping something like www.ntlworld.com and you should get a response, that proves the router is working and getting a useable VM IP...., then in that case it seems it must be the lan part between the router and the computer, but its a puzzle as you can connect to the internal web server of the router already. you say the new NTL250 directly connected to the PC gives a valid IP and works, what IP range does it have then?, still the 80.*.*.* ?. if the router is not getting a ping even though its got what seems like a valid WAN IP , *while it shouldnt be needed , i usually like to temp clone the router MAC in the PC network card rather than the other way around, as then you will see if it works directly wired to the PC (with router removed)and then hopefully (dont forget to reset the PC card MAC back) when you reconnect the router to the NTL250 any NTL side setting will see the router MAC as it was just working with that MAC a minute ago (and that blank WAN address in picture should have a 82.* in there). ---------- Post added at 08:41 ---------- Previous post was at 08:04 ---------- Quote:
its the same if your wired or wirelessly connecting, eather DHCP client or fixed IP both ends. is your router status page got a valid WAN or is it blank as above?, you need that WAN address filled in or the router isnt talking to the VM modem. |
Re: Belkin F5d7230-4 - NTL / Virgin Media Cable Modem
Sorry a correction, when I lose internet connection and can't even access the router wirelessly.
It is the little modem light on the belkin router that is lit, and nothing else. Even the power light is off. |
