Try posting on FB or Twitter, different team and they tend to be pretty good.

Thanks Nopanic, but I have reconciled myself to leaving, no big deal, it is just too much aggro trying to get them to admit that there is a problem at their end.

I know exactly how you feel and sympathise.

VM/Ntl/whatever have rested on their laurals for ages, treating the subs like muck, because they knew they were the only game in town for fast BB.

They are still behaving in the same way but now they are just one Company amongst many. I expect the penny will drop eventually but by that time it might be too late.

Get them round to test your signal levels, apparently the modems run best at -6db to -8db and Tivo at 0db, also chack All F conectors, plus if you have abrown drop cable going to the box it may be that.

Also, old isolators (ones with 2 ports) are old and out of date, a new one can give you an extra 10meg

That was reported I the local rag about 3 weeks ago but they didn't give a date.

Judging by the problems people are having with low speeds after the doubling the rush to keep ahead of BT may come back to bite them.

Signal and power levels are fine, I have a black drop cable, previously speeds have always been fine since install, no dropouts or rebooting. Currently it's back at 100+ but upload is still capped at 2.7 Mb/s. I only upgraded to 100 Mb for the extra upload, I was quite happy with the 50 Mb download speed.
I would get Infinity now but when I had ADSL I was always having problems with the line between home and the pole even though BT had strung a new line with the introduction of ADSL.

introduction of ADSL? so you didnt get rewiring for a fault. it was a fresh install. that must of been done a while back. You sure they didnt mess anything up during install?

did you mean your waiting for BT FTTC ?

I had ADSL installed by BT just after it came out, previously on dial-up, hey I go back a bit. First modem was an Acoustic Coupler which was surprisingly good considering you had to stuff your phone handset into it.

No, BT FTTP fibre to the premises, I don't want to know telephone wires after the hassle with adsl.
I was reading that BT have come up with a solution whereby they connect fibre to the cabinet which means that they are going to be able to roll it out much sooner than they originally planned.

In the short term, based on your estimates, you would get the best speeds from BT, but as we all know, BT sell of their network to the highest bidder, and then anyone else they can get money from. Virgin Media is a stand alone network, not selling off it's network to other sub ISPs like the long list that BT supports, so if you stay the course i'd bet money you'd end up in a better place with better speed.

Our estimate was March - April 2012, let's hope it doesn't mean you will have 9 months of crap. :D

I meant if its that old didnt you ask for a repull or have them check the cables?

From whats been said on here FTTP will cost you a bit. If your willing to pay thats up to you but if i was you and BT infinity was available to you id get in touch with them explain your previous issues, not VM. and say youll join if they sort you out a new repull from the cabinet. you could then try sneak in if they agree a repull for FTTP. wont be part of the free install but if they agree to a repull then paying extra for the change in cables might not be as much. MAYBE! no harm in trying.

I know how you feel slow... VM are big users of the "play stupid" until we upgrade UBR's. i.e. don't try to fix tough problems at all and just brush them under the carpet until the UBR is upgraded, hence why people had months of problems on the official forums.

BT installed a new big cabinet together with a small one a few metres from my pole, I remember they also installed a new cable to the box at the time, was about 3 years ago. Overall I am about 1 1/4 miles from the exchange but only about 30 metres from the cabinets. The map also says that the Oldham exchange is FTTP ready.
Infinity does look better priced though. ;)

I doubt if BT suddenly upping the anti making VM rush to increase their speeds has helped the situation, Engineer who came here looked totally fed up.

But he is still just a standard residential customer who has a cabling problem - why would BT send out a senior person, rather than an engineer?

Oldham isn't getting FTTP, it has FTTC available and as of next year it'll have FTTP on demand available in common with other areas.

BT Retail can't cut special deals with residential customers to pull fibre instead of copper for various reasons.

If a new line is needed a new line is what the OP will get. Either way OP will be getting copper to their home in the first instance. This time next year the option may be there for FTTP on demand, whether this requires a copper loop to supply voice or is a full replacement isn't known.

Off topic but a major puzzler for me - why didn't BT introduce some sort of VOIP service (or even analogue optical nodes) where they've done the FTTC work so that they could make all that bypassed copper redundant and cut maintenance costs or even rip it out for scrap.

I stayed the course and my 50mb connection dropped to 12mb while on BT my 40mb increased to 80. Every time I've been with VM in the last 6 years I've eventually ended up with a connection running at 1/4 it's quoted speed.

VM do sell their network to other companies, just not residential ISPs.

In fact, 60 out of the last 74 months, or my entire adult life, I have got or have been able to get better speeds on BT.

If you're that distance from the cab I'd expect 200mbps on vectored VDSL2 30a, i.e. without fibre.

Regulatory reasons, they've only recently been permitted to supply voice over FTTP with a battery backup of 1 hour in locations where they previously have had copper.

They're also still obliged to supply a full copper loop to anyone who wants one within reason, removing copper ties homes to FTTC/P which Ofcom do not yet permit.

I did assume he was a contractor because he wasn't wearing the red Virgin overalls although he was in a VM painted transit. When I have had an engineer wearing the red overalls they always seem to have all the time in the world. ;)

It's true, the true VM engineers do have a slot more time to give, but to get there you have to run around like a blue arsed blue, its not the way it should be, so many times i've wanted to stay on, but your figures suffer and then you have no chance of getting to be a proper VM service tech. Its sad really.
