After 13 years with Virgin

I've taken the plunge and cancelled. I actually think Virgin is great, but £105 a month for my package and I don't even have Sky movies or Sports in HD, and haven't made a phonecall in a year. Just too expensive.

Time to move on.

carlwaring 04-05-2012 21:14

Re: After 13 years with Virgin

Well at least you gave them a call and asked them if there might be some deal available to reduce your monthly amount; right? I mean; who wouldn't?

That would have formed part of the call by default, they do not just say thank you and goodbye.

For £105 a month mate you should have Sky Sports and the Movies, thats what i pay and im on the VIP package with 4 boxes, i'd be asking questions if i was you.

I would try ringing, I am long term customer who had a call from them tonight offering me the VIP Collection for 103 .90. This is 100mb broadband and includes Sky sports and Movies and Talk unlimited.

That price seems wrong on so many levels ?

Re: After 13 years with Virgin

Hi lads; I did ring to cancel. The lady was very nice, explained that I should reduce my packages etc to save money etc. She was very nice, persistent, but I think I am kinda finished.

I genuinely do like Virgin, 13 years+ so far, but it's just too expensive. I am planning to go to BT Vision. I know it's not going to be as good, but it will be half the price, albeit for a poorer service.

I'd try again because, as some have explained already, there should be more they can do.

Get back on the phone to them and press the button that they tell you to press if you're thinking of leaving, and ask for a better deal. Don't just give up your services without a fight. Especially if you are happy with the service you get.

Superblade7 05-05-2012 05:22

Re: After 13 years with Virgin

Nor,

I would advise as per the other posters to ring and speak to retentions on the 'thinking of leaving us option' and tell them exactly what services you want and roughly what you are willing to pay.

I've been a little peeved lately with the recent price increase and little to show for it in terms of new channels, etc, but have always been happy with VM's services. As I'm recently out of contract I rang up just the other day, advised them I didn't particularly wish to leave but told them what I wanted and the comparable offer with Sky. They worked out the best price they could offer me for my requirements and I was content to accept and renew my contract for 12 months.

I am pretty sure they would be willing to keep you as a customer too. You don't mention what services you have but if you currently pay £105, you could switch to the new VIP Collection for £103.90 and pretty much get everything they have to offer including your Sky HD channels - http://store.virginmedia.com/bundles/vip.html

Hope this helps and good luck getting a better deal.

Re: After 13 years with Virgin

I can't imagine where they get £105 from, but if I'm reading the op correctly, he doesn't want to increase his services, but reduce his bill. Assuming that the current cost includes some heavy call charges not included in his packages, the vip deal will probably increase his bill and give him channels he's not bothered about.

Suspect they are one of those who have never bothered to review their package so are paying the top rates for everything.

However, without knowing exactly what they have (only they do not get Sky Sports & Movies) it is hared to say where & why they are paying over the top.

Phone up and haggle. You wouldn't think of doing anything else if it was a car insurance quote. If you don't haggle, you don't get!

Reading this again (and looking at his old posts... )

He has
50Mb BB
TiVo (with Sky Movies and Sports - but only in SD) - guess TV XL
Phone M {guess as he says no calls}

So using Premiere Collection and Bundle builder for SKY M&Sp comes to 88.40

So just guessing - add extra TV (say Adult collection) comes to 105.40 per month. So the cost (for package *could* be OK).

So only money saving by "losing" some TV add-ons (or whatever it is that bumps the cost above 88.40)??

I don't understand, your going to bt vision, that's like comparing apples to pears? If so why not downgrade virgin to m+ tv with TiVo?

I have also been with virgin etc from the early days of Blueyonder, have phoned on more then one occasion to reduce my bill but have never been offered some of the packages people have talked about, have made some small savings on my telephone service but that is all, would like to change to sky to take advantage of my Samsung 3D smart TV!,but to much hassle,I have the XL service

Re: After 13 years with Virgin

Deals are there to be had with VM for those that review their packages regularly like me.

I have M phone, TV XL with TiVo,10mb BB,Sky sports, and a V+ free of charge in the bedroom(allowed to keep old V+ box),and a £7 discount on my bill applied for 2 years, also got free TiVo and activation new 12 month contract though.

£73.50 after the current price rise is factored in.

My advice is get onto retensions and see what they can do for you.

OP you are paying way over the odds seemingly for what you have, but as you have not listed exactly what you have ie 10mb BB or Higher ect ect its hard to judge what you should be paying.

Check out the VM website, the new 'Collections' seem to be saving people some money if the are suitable for you.

Failing that, price up an equivalent package with Sky and then (if you are out of contract) give retentions a call and say Sky have offered me .... what can you do to match? They are usually pretty good about it and should offer you a better deal.

Re: After 13 years with Virgin

I heard an interesting tip on the radio this week. Some retention departments-and I don't know if Virgin are amongst them-have quotas for how many deals they're allowed to give out in any one day. The tip being, if you phone one day and get fobbed off, at least be prepared to phone again and give then another chance.

I would agree with that. As mentioned elsewhere, the deal I got on Monday (though not as good as I was originally told) was not available by Thursday. Though whether that was to do with "quotas" or not I wouldn't know.

i upgraded to the tivo in march given a new 12 month contract, last week i was looking at the collections and noticed what it was offering was more than i got and i was paying more, so i called vm spoke to someone about this and got the cold shoulder ( not impressed ) so i called retentions and spoke to someone who agreed that what i was paying was to much ! so i got my bill reduced, broadband upgraded but to get this i had to sign another 12 month contract ( again ) so mr berket got a email from me !

Yes. You have to sign a new contract every time you re-negotiate. That you already signed a new one recently is entirely irrelevant. Is THAT clear now?

I agree entirely but.....I've been with virginmedia from day one, had VIP collection since release date which as crept up fron £75 to at present £105 pm

So I rang Virgin last week after seeing the new VIP Collections offers as i have been out of contract for years although i'm still a virgin payer.

I asked for the VIP collection offer were it's half price for 6 month then £90 but the lady said thats for new customers Sir, not for you who is paying £105 a month and still as the V+ box, old 256 ambit modem and 20mb BB!!!!

So my argument with her was that if i took on the new VIP offer i would have a new product/ new contract

so therefore becoming a new customer again!!!

she wouldn't budge

Isn't the fact that they let you out of a contact you'd willingly agreed to just a few weeks earlier actually a point in Virgin's favour?

My package:

TV XL
Sky Sports

I don't have Sky Movies. I don't have any Premium HD channels.

Nor, check out the Premiere Collection (http://store.virginmedia.com/bundles/premiere.html) as this is £58.90 plus Sky Sports at £22.50 plus second additional V+ at £6.50 (I think) = £87.90.

I would imagine they will let you keep your first additional V+ instead of the V HD box that is included in the Premiere Collection so I reckon you could save around £17 a month keeping everything you currently have whilst getting slightly faster BB (60Mb).

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Den,

Checkout the new VIP Collection (http://store.virginmedia.com/bundles/vip.html) for £103.90 which will give you 100Mb BB and Sky Premium HD channels too. Although you'll have to add £11.50 for the extra TiVo you have but that will still only be £115.40 so should save you a couple of quid a month and get you a bit extra!

Good luck!:)

Re: After 13 years with Virgin

after 13/14 years with vm (cable tel) its with great sadness i have to terminate my contract with them, the building i'm moving to doesn't have vm and the area doesn't have vm (absolutely gutted big time) however the new apartment is just stunning.

so looks like its bt/sky, i so wanted to get the tivo box but gutted i can't :(

if things change and vm do cable the area then VM is my number one choice

I've just upgraded to VIP colection but instead of an additional V HD box, I'm keeping the 500Gb TiVo, I've also jumped from 30Mb to 100Mb BB, and now have a phoneline...and my bill has actually fallen! The savings are there - if you ask!

Re: After 13 years with Virgin

Just wanted to say that after a late call with Virgin Media they offered me a better deal than I currently had. It has saved me around £25 per month for the same packages, so I decided to take the offer and stay with VM. It meant a new 12 month contract, but overall was worth it.

Thanks for all the advice in this thread, appreciate all the help.
