This has already been asked, Virgin Media don't have any plans as yet, it's worth noting that it is the broadcasters themelves that decided to close these channels down.

Sky Living Loves was the latest channel to be introduced by Virgin Media Television shortly before it was taken over, a move to boost advertising revenue as well boost viewing statistics, Sky sees no reason to keep this channel open and has decided to close it probably to replace it with something else.

I had read some where that Sky was using this transponder for Sky F1 as there is limited space available, how true this is I have no idea.

I was refering to content from NBC Universal and Sky.

Was thinking Virgin Media should add Universal HD and Style Network and with the loss of Sky Living Loves, possibly Sky Travel or even Sky Atlantic

Oh i see no chance of sky atlantic at the mo IMO as i think sky are keeping it as a USP.

But the universal HD channel should not be beyond the possibilities.

I would prefer all "new" channels to H D ones that we already have . Could some explain why both are used to run the same channel - Can not H D be viewed Non H D sets? Will try when I get home. Using sender to push to my only non H D tv. I am sure I have done that in the past - do not recall a problem ( or perhaps I havent ! get old!!)
Please dont say because it takes up more space when recording.

-Channel 5 +1 to launch before April.
-Alibi HD to launch later this year on Virgin Media.

Not all STB's are HD, so you need a box to decode the HD stream first, but yes a non HD tv can view a HD channel (in SD)

Digital set top boxes given out by NTL,Telewest and Cable and Wireless between 1999 and 2008/9 usually made by Scientific Atlanta(Cisco),Pace and Samsung are not HD.

Now they give out Virgin HD boxes as Standard boxes, there is no recording facilities with these boxes.

Same with Sky Standard boxes given out between 1998 and 2009, they also have no recording facility.

Sounds like a great sales ploy -

You don't have to pay for HD channels if you choose not to have them, the standard boxes were introduced in 1999 or 1998 for sky when HD was unheard of in the UK

First of all this was said as a joke.

The thought is
1)"scrap" all SD channels
2)so that non HD boxes will not work.
3) You then can sell HD boxes to any and every one that does not have them.
You make the money on the sale of "new" boxes - Hey even "freeview" could get in on the act:D

LOL But the problem is, people in this country, don't look beyond the word 'Free' many people will only take out a service if it says 'free installation' or 'free HD box'. So selling something that can be offered free elsewhere won't work.

They would have to pay for a box by one means or another as removing all the SD services non HD boxes /TV`s simply would not work.

To get "Freeview" everyone ( well almost) had to do that. If it an`t HD its pay out again time.for be it TV or some kind of box. ergo no freeviewbox/TV with HD no service.

Then people will be put off from the pay-tv market.

Also HD is not all that, I fail to see much difference and you don't need freeview, you can also use Freesat or freesat from sky or even the internet. It's like saying you need a TV licence to watch TV, if you don't let them know you have a TV and you don't answer them, you avoid it.

A lot of people can't afford it!

£26 per month for Virgin XL
TV Licence £145 per year
IRS communal TV system in my block £3.80 per month (no way round it)

It's getting a lot to watch TV, don't you think?

Alan, you live in Hampstead as well, do you live in Camden council property or in a block managed by Camden council?

They are forcing all residents to pay for the communal IRS systems which was not needed in the first place as the existing aerials are suitable for Digital freeview.

EPG number 164 might end up the EPG number for Universal HD (if ever launched on VM), while 159 might end up the EPG number of Style Network (if ever launched on VM)
