Create a file link in Lotus Notes

Im trying to create and email on Lotus Notes with a link to a file thats on a server. Im following the help and googled advice but cant get it to work.

When i do this

In the body field of a memo, type in the normal path that you want to point to, i.e. h:\data\files\info.doc - highlight this data path and use Ctrl+C to copy to clipboard. Whilst the data path is still highlighted, goto the Notes Create menu item - then to Hotspot - then to link hotspot.

In the Value field on the Link Hotspot Resource dialog box, past the clipboard datapath contents (Ctrl+V) - finally click on the little tick mark to the right of the value vield.

close the dialoge box.

The highlighted text is now blue in colour. I send the email to myself and I should now be able to click on the Link hotspot in order to open the file h:\data\files\info.doc.

for some reason it always errors with "Invalid URL"

Any clues?

Hi, this isn't easy. This is working on the assumption you have Domino Designer installed in Notes by the way. There is a way to do this by creating an action hotspot and inserting an Execute command. The syntax is @Command([Execute] ; application ; fileNames)

The use of this is describes in the following pdf file on page 454 - http://doc.notes.net/uafiles.nsf/doc.../DDpg_vol1.pdf

I tried it but our email system thought it was a script bomb and cleaned it up but it might work for you.

Unless Gary is in his company's IT department it's extremely unlikely he has the Domino Designer component installed. Untrained users can do some very serious damage with it.

Sadly, I don't have notes installed on my PC any more - we used to use it as our intranet publishing tool before we developed a browser-based alternative. The IT developers still use Domino behind the scenes but we don't bother with Notes any more. From memory, what Gary's describing sounds about right, but unfortunately I can't test it. :( No idea what to suggest.

I just managed it as follows

I typed the path to the file into notepad e.g H:\data\file.doc & copied the path to the clipboard.

In Notes - new memo, I typed in some text e.g "click here" & highlighted it

I then chose 'create' 'hotspot' chose 'link hotspot' & chose 'type' as 'URL' then pasted the path to the file into the 'value' field.

On sending the file to myself, clicking on the hotspot text loaded the file.
