Someone uses my address as theirs for banking!!!

I am renting a flat in UK, and I learnt that the previous tenant of the flat is still using their old address (now my current address) for banking with several leading banks in UK. I also got to know that the previous tenant currently lives in a different address in the same city.

I am wondering as to what is my previous tenant's motivation to use my current address, and also wondering if there is any ulterior motives behind that?

No I do not know exactly, but with some effort, I can find it for sure.

Could be an attempt to run up debts and stop the bank being able to find them or a simple oversight.

Either way i'd nip it in the bud to protect yourself. What if their debit card gets sent to your address and it ends being used fraudulently?

Thanks RichardCoulter.

I do not think it is a simple oversight as the bank is sending letters to my address for couple of years now. And in fact, I called the bank to let them know (the name of the customer) that the the relevant person is not living here.

I also want to protect myself, and what do you suggest for that in particular?

If you see your postie ask him about redirecting the mail? Or return it unopened via the post to the banks in question with "Not Known Here" written on the envelopes?

I think you should send by registered mail a letter to the bank(s) involved stating that the recipient no longer lives at the address and they should amend their records accordingly.

This could be some sort of fraud and you want to protect yourself. Especially if bailiffs get involved.

BTW Welcome to the forum.

Mark the mail "Return to Sender" and pop the letters in the nearest post box, the bank will then stop sending mail to your address.

Thanks heero_yuy.

They are not using my name, but only the address. Do you think there is still any chance for me being a suspect of someone else's fraudulent activity.

I am wondering if they do this for address confirmation for their children's schools?

Will this affect my credit score adversely?

I wouldn't take any chances

They might but that is also a fraud and the council take a dim view of that.

Don't take any chances here. I smell a rat.

Many thanks for the information. In your case, the person may have died, but in my case, the person is living in a different area of the same city, and I presume they (the previous tenant of my current flat) do this intentionally. For fact, my current address is popular among parents with school age children.

If this is getting on your nerves, i'd contact the Ombudsman.

For security reasons, banks are supposed to suppress letters etc and mark as 'dormant' any account that hasn't had any activity for a period of time and they have not been able to verify that the customer is still alive and living there.

The Alliance & Leicester do this annually for an account that I no longer use but wish to keep open. Thirty years is outrageous!!

I had this with a Lloyds account for a few months, they wouldn't do anything when I telephoned them because I wasn't the account holder and couldn't answer any of their security questions!! In the end I threatened to (and did) contact their customer and told him what was happening and recited all the personal information I had about him, it still made no difference.

In the end the Ombudsman sorted this nonsense out and even awarded me a token amount of compensation to reflect the inconvenience and waste of my time & effort.
