Lack of Evidence of Social Media Russian Propaganda to Political Campaigns in West

Well well well....

Quote:

There is a lack of evidence supporting claims that the Kremlin used Facebook and Twitter to interfere in political debates in the West.

False personas and bots are openly visible on both social media platforms, primarily seeking to drive traffic to pornographic websites.

Facebook and Twitter's failure to tackle the mass exploitation of their platforms for spam campaigns is a technical failure. There is certainly no reason to suspect that astroturfers (people presenting synthetic campaigns as if they were grassroots-led) would not be exploiting it, too.

But attempts to tie those astoturfing campaigns to an organised conspiracy by the Russian government have not been accompanied by key evidence.

We certainly need more evidence to conclusively say they did and this is an interesting article that we shouldn't go overboard. The article is saying there isn't evidence that these Trolls are linked to the Russian government but there is evidence they originate from Russia and so nothing wrong with investigating if there is a link.

I do think if we're not careful we succub to tunnel vision and refuse to take on-board anything that contradicts how we see the world. The article was good:

Because the integrity we show when identifying a disinformation campaign should not reflect the methodology of that campaign and tell us what we already know to be true, but rather set a standard of evidence we can deploy when we encounter these campaigns again in the future.
We do need real evidence before we accept it as a matter of fact!

Bit of a long title for a thread isn't it Mick ? ;)

Seems more like an opinion from a biased source than news. We all know Putin is an innocent nice bloke who doesn't even know how to switch a PC on..

And how do we know you're not a Russian 'bot'? :D

I liked the bit about the onus is on the person seeing the obviously really stupid fake stories and not being so gullible to believe it, as much as I despise the Clinton's, I certainly saw the Democrats and the Clinton's running a Pedophile ring from a Pizza shop.... to be a completely nut job story.

Yes, the character limit was exceeded for the title I wanted to use so I had to play around the words to 'stay in' the limit.

The unwieldy thread title sounds like it was written by a Russian! :D But it's a great article, and I rate Sky News as a good source.

Sill question I know but, has anyone applied the same criteria to anti-Trump and Clinton supporters?

I think we certainly need to prevent Russia from interfering in elections. But I think people are using this as a proxy for the ideal that the last elections would have had a different result if not for the Russians. Which I think is very doubtful.

Re: Lack of Evidence of Social Media Russian Propaganda to Political Campaigns in Wes

I was listening to someone talking about the rise of right wing, Trump's victory and Brexit on the radio a few months ago. She said something that actually makes sense. She compared the various campaigns, and found one thing that Trump, Brexiteers and the right wing had in common when campaigning. The message of their campaigns could be boiled down to a simple statement that things are broken, and they can fix them. Clinton and the remain campaign both essentially said "Things are OK, but need a little improvement. I can improve them", but that does not resonate as much as saying things are broken. It may or not be true that things were alright, but I've long thought that in a political campaign, the truth is often the last thing people worry about.

Regarding the rumoured Russian campaign to get Trump elected, I believe it happened. I don't know whether I believe it had any appreciable effect on the election. I'd like to believe that it didn't. However, experience teaches me not to believe that. In my experience, people are far too ready to believe what they read online without questioning it. That said, I would HOPE that people are a little more careful when they are deciding who to vote for.

However, that is, from what I understand, a very small part of the investigation.

In my experience, people are actively looking for something online to believe in without questioning it . . . as long as it fits their agenda
