CCTV 'spy cars' rake in £8m in fines

Unsuspecting motorists were stung for more than £8million in fines last year by a fleet of 'drive-by spy cars'.
The 187,993 victims of the CCTV-equipped Smart cars included parents stopping momentarily to drop off children by the school gates.
Civil liberties campaigners described the cars as 'a very dangerous escalation in Britain's surveillance society'.

This photo clearly looks fake.
the camera is too near the back of the car, and hangs over the lip. that and the writing on the boot is just photshopped on.

We already get the DVLA van cruising about with its 4 corner-mounted cameras catching cars without tax, etc. The local Tesco has DVLA cameras marking vehicles for clamping for infractions too.

I'm all for it... you break the rules, you pay the fine.

Whilst I agree with the principal of if you can't pay then don't break the rules, and that if there wasn't some enforcement then there would inevitably be anarchy, there has been a worryingly increased trend of the indiscriminant use of CCTV type enforcement.

OK so it's not a labour intensive as the good old fashioned talking to dished out by a police office, but officers could apply discretion and common sense that the CCTV cannot. Moreover the officer's sixth senses can be tingling and the opportunity to speak to someone for something minor can then perhaps lead to something more significant which the dumb CCTV would never detect.
