Flat Earth Society

I was wondering if this would be better in the jokes section but as it is a lifestyle I settled on here.

Surely that should read "they've got members" from one side to the other side of the disk that we misguided souls have been hoodwinked into thinking is a spherical Earth!!!!

I actually know a Flat Earther, he looks quite normal, held down a very responsible job but is an absolute nutter. We gave him a Globe one Birthday, he was not very amused, it has lived in his downstairs loo for years. :D.

Gives him something to "ponder on" while he is "contemplating"!:D

And Lisa Stansfield proved it in 1989. She went around the world trying to find her baby. Turns out he'd gone away, but she didn't know when or why.

Actually... it was already known the world was round then, the point in dispute was the size of the globe, and whether ships of his size would be able to sail the way around

From here : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myth_o...hy_of_Columbus

Quote:

The issue in the 1490s was not the shape of the Earth, but its size, and the position of the east coast of Asia, as Irving in fact points out
....
The disputed point was not the shape of the Earth, nor the idea that going west would eventually lead to Japan and China, but the ability of European ships to sail that far across open seas. The small ships of the day (Columbus's three ships varied between 20.5 and 23.5 m – or 67 to 77 feet – in length and carried about 90 men) simply could not carry enough food and water to reach Japan. The ships barely reached the eastern Caribbean islands. Already the crews were mutinous, not because of some fear of "sailing off the edge", but because they were running out of food and water with no chance of any new supplies within sailing distance. They were on the edge of starvation.[20] What saved Columbus was the unknown existence of the Americas precisely at the point he thought he would reach Japan. His ability to resupply with food and water from the Caribbean islands allowed him to return safely to Europe. Otherwise his crews would have died, and the ships foundered.

If the Earth is flat, we better hope it doesn't turn upside down. That's gonna be a bad day!

Exactly. If you think about it, if Columbus had believed that the earth was flat, sailing straight for the edge without any idea of how far away it was and without sufficient supplies to get back would have been a suicidal way to behave. He clearly hoped to make landfall somewhere he could replenish the hold before sailing back again. He just happened to believe that would be Japan, not an unknown landmass in the West.

Exactly, the reason they’re called the West Indies is because he set off West hoping to find a quicker route to India which he knew was in the East.

Otherwise we wouldn't launch rockets from the northern hemisphere, we could just take them to Australia and let them fall off into space.

And thus no North or South. I’m thinking Brian must be a flat Earther!

We could just take them to Earth’s B-side and let them drop off into space?

This has to be one of the most agreeable CF threads I've ever read.
