The Telly Tablet - does it make sense?

I've been a bit surprised by the lack of debate here about the new Telly Tablet (unless it's hiding somewhere and I just haven't found it). To me, it seems quite a tempting way of giving up a second Virgin box, and using it as a portable tv. Arguably, it doesn't offer that much that other tablets don't, but it's size - and HD capability, seem quite attractive. On the other hand, it's not cheap, though it might be worth it for me.

One negative, though, is that it doesn't seem to acquire its feed from the Tivo V6, but in the same way I currently use TV Anywhere on my iPad. The big downside of that, for me, is the one minute delay on the Sky Sports App, very irritating when I'm trying to keep up to date on a Test Match! Can anyone confirm whether I've understood this correctly?

Makes no sense whatsoever .Why not develop an app to use with an existing tablet like a Samsung,Apple or Fire .Sky have developed an app for both Android and iOS to use on Tablets and phones which take the feed from the Q box ,you can download onto the device and view anywhere .

AFAIK Virgin Media have developed an app that runs on both iOS and Android and allows download of recordings from V6 for offline viewing.

It's call the TV Anywhere app and that's what will be pre-installed on the TellyTablet.

I'd prefer Sky proper multi-room tv any day. Tubbytablets might be ok for kids, until they get sat on or eaten by the dog and I prefer watching tv on a tv. (VM won't fix or support it like set-top-boxes!) TV Anywhere just seems buggy and badly written and full of errors and restrictions. If it is what you want you can get a 24" tv with android built in for half the price but then you still don't get the benefits of multi-tv and are gambling on whether Virgin will let it work with a third party product and whether tv anywhere does what you want it.

Do you know of a lot of £75 tablets with a 14" HD screen?

Just had a look and you're right, you can get really cheap tablets now, but not for 14" models.

Compared to the prices I saw, £299 doesn't seem bad at all.

If someone is happy to watch TV in this way it probably works out cheaper than paying a second TiVo installation and ongoing fee.

Personally, i'll stick with using my Samsung 10" tablet if I want to do this. The model I have is currently selling for £259, so when you look at it this way, another £40 for a 40% bigger screen isn't bad at all.

I say this as someone who scoffed at this when I first read about it, but if you're in the market for a large screen tablet it looks ok.

If you just want it instead of another TiVo, you might as well do as MisterQ says and buy a larger screen Android TV for half the price!

I wonder what make it will be though?

I strongly suggest people check their forthcoming bills extremely closely if they want to be a part of this shambles. I would have suggested making a note of the person you speak to and made detailed notes/record the conversation but with VM it doesn't seem to matter as they seem happy to tell you anything and then charge differently down the line. I know from personal experience that they can agree an offer with you and then "change their mind" (their words, not mine) and charge whatever they like without letting you know and there is no comeback. Registering a complaint and asking it to be escalated for someone to call you back, just gets ignored, in my experience.

Seems like they are giving the tablets away for free to new customers, maybe they have realized there is no market for a 14" tablet (with VM restricted old version of android) when you can get much bigger tv's with android built in for the apps (for much less cost) - does TubbyTablet even have the means to remotely change volume/channel?

Taken from the V6 thread.

You don't have to buy one Richard as no one is forcing you to buy one.:)

I know, I was just saying that those that want one may be better off waiting to see if they can get one for free.

Yes but you need to import them from china look on ebay, would i trust them though is a different matter.

However looking more into the specs of VMs tv tablet it doesn't look too bad in fairness still not worth £299 imo but if you're able to pay monthly via a contract which i think they're offering then £299 is a good price as if you got something similar on a credit agreement you'd probably pay a tad more than £299 anyway, however to buy outright i think £250 would be more suited but no need to argue over £49.

So I suppose the real question is VM's Telly Tablet a cheap Chinese import with a time expired OS or something better?

You're not getting a decent 14" tablet for £75 even from China. Even second hand ones from there you are talking £200+ for that size, and with lower specs.
