Major Incident: Finsbury Park, London - Van Ploughs into Pedestrians

BREAKING:

Quote:

A van has collided with worshippers leaving a mosque in north London, according to the Muslim Council of Britain.

The Metropolitan Police say they are dealing with a "major incident" as a result of the collision in Seven Sisters Road, Finsbury Park.

A Sky News producer at the scene says the incident happened as worshippers were leaving the Finsbury Park Mosque at midnight Ramadan prayers.

The council said on Twitter: "We have been informed that a van has run over worshippers as they left #FinsburyPark Mosque. Our prayers are with the victims."

There seems top be conflicting reports in the article you'linked to.

Quote:

There have been some angry scenes from locals - with one man shouting at police officers.

He claimed it took them one hour to arrive at the scene while "someone bled to death".

Apparently the Iman of the Mosque kept the guy and stopped him from being attacked from others. Credit to him!

Awful few months for London though.

i can't answer that
i have been watching on the news the" Muslim community " is outraged at this attack asking how can anyone do this , my first thought was are you for real this is a copy of atrocities carried out by Muslims ,now i'm not condoning it but it must have been on the cards that this would eventually happen ,i wouldn't want to live in London it's out of control.

This is terrible and there's going to be the inevitable confusion about what actually happened. I think everyone needs to just calm down and not go around propagating inaccurate nonsense but of course there are those in our society, including very sadly some high profile politicians, who seize upon this sort of thing to stir up more trouble which they believe suits their agenda in one perverse manner or another.

Don't know where you live but you've more chance of being killed in your car wherever you are than being the victim of terrorists in London or anywhere else in the UK for that matter.

London is no more out of control than any other major city and a good deal less so than most.

So this was some sort of revenge attack ?

Quote:

Witnesses said the driver had shouted: “I want to kill all Muslims” before onlookers pinned him to the ground.
Doesn seem like a proper terrorist attack.

someone farts it's labeled a terror attack no one waits for evidence anymore

Mick 19-06-2017 14:09

Re: Major Incident: Finsbury Park, London - Van Ploughs into Pedestrians

I think the evidence is there for all to see, a van being hired to mow people down, with the intent to kill, installing fear and terror, so without skirting around the idea, that some don't want to call this a terror attack and more like a revenge attack, but it is whichever way you look at it, a terrorist incident with an extreme right wing/revenge attack being the motive.

However, we still need to know the nationality of the arrested person. Witnesses say he was a white male, all police have confirmed so far is that a 48 year old male has been arrested from the scene.

Pierre 19-06-2017 16:19

Re: Major Incident: Finsbury Park, London - Van Ploughs into Pedestrians

It's a revenge terror attack by some far right knob.

It is right to call it a terror attack, it is designed to terrorise the Muslim community, so they're now looking over their shoulder.

As some mentioned earlier, it was only a matter of when not if this would happen.

Re: Major Incident: Finsbury Park, London - Van Ploughs into Pedestrians

I'm pretty stunned some people can't see it as a terror attack to be honest.

Osem 19-06-2017 17:07

Re: Major Incident: Finsbury Park, London - Van Ploughs into Pedestrians

I'd say they there are degrees of terror attack. There's the 9/11 variety right down to the failed petrol bomb . This was intended to terrorise and was no doubt done in revenge so yes I feel it is a terrorist act. However, I doubt very much that this guy is part of a much wider scale terror organisation on the scale of ISIS or the IRA for example, dedicated to destroying Islam. That's the difference IMHO.

terrorist
ˈ
noun
1.
a person who uses unlawful violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims.

adjective
1.
unlawfully using violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims.

so what political aim is there in this ? to me it's a nutter who hates muslims and wanted to kill them its hate not terror imo

Not sure about the dictionary definition. imo any attack intended to cause terror amongst a particular community is terrorism. Whether this bloke intended this as a terror act we don't know yet.

London's not out of control, it's a great city. Saying it's out of control is not only incorrect but it's exactly what the terrorists want to hear.
A lot of these attacks come from outside London including the Finsbury Park attacker. Big cities especially capital cities attract attacks as attacks there will make the headlines. London (and Manchester) have survived two world wars, the IRA and will survive these terrorists.

Trashy as they are though, I haven't heard of a right wing rag calling for actual violence yet. I doubt the dude was just radicalized via newspapers either. He'd have to have had at least some of his wheels fall off to end up like that.

The tabloid press isn't the big problem here IMHO, it's the internet and social media which aren't bound by the same rules that the other media are and clearly have allowed themselves to become vehicles for all sorts of weirdos and far worse to spread their bile and hatred. It's there that you find the really dangerous stuff and it's still going on right under our noses.

Yup. Far worse out there than the tabloid press. Plenty of far right blogs, YouTubers and social media accounts that can spread this stuff around. It's clear that the internet provides a platform for all extremists to spread their hate and it's hard to police the line between free speech and incitement to violence.

Although we have no idea of what happened here I would guess it's more likely he slowly got poisoned by the internet and those groups rather than the press.

Re: Major Incident: Finsbury Park, London - Van Ploughs into Pedestrians

Or got fed up of islamic attacks and decided to see how they like it, I don't agree with what he did but it's more dangerous for everyone if the growing frustration within our society is just shrugged off with blame falling on the internet. Lets not forget that there is a lot more good done by the internet then bad and we have a government looking to further hinder privacy on the internet of everyone not just the nuts on either side. Right wing or islamic extremism both are a few cookies short of a packet and it was only a matter of time before islam would find itself the target of attacks.

Totally agree with you.

If people don't think that terrorists, including potential terrorists, are being dealt with appropriately, some members of society will seek to deal with it themselves, however wrong that may be.

These people are terrorists too. The idea it's revenge is nonsense and the same excuse people like the Manchester bomber use to justify their attacks, that it's revenge for Western actions in the Middle East. Not only is this not even remotely a reason for it but the people they're taking it out on are innocent.

The people murdered or injured in Finsbury Park were just innocent people. He murdered people because of his own warped mind.

Osem 21-06-2017 17:19

Re: Major Incident: Finsbury Park, London - Van Ploughs into Pedestrians

There is a slight difference here. This guy apparently set out to attack muslims. The nutter who bombed Manchester killed indiscriminately just like those **** behind 7/7, 9/11 etc. They think nothing of killing their own.

It certainly used to be but recently it has made a concious effort to reverse this image:

Finsbury Park Mosque: How religious centre went from 'al-Qaeda guesthouse' to model of moderation

Of course, UK Mosques, some of which seem to have dubious funding sources, need to be, as Caesar's Wife, above suspicion and, as importantly, seen to be above suspicion.

Only then will they be able to combat the negative image pursed by the right of centre mass media.

The publication, in the Sun, of the actions of the Imman in restraining the crowd is a welcome start in maybe trying to reverse this process:
