Seph's BT Infinity Upgrade log
I thought I'd record performance on my Infinity circuit as I move from the 40/10 to the 80/20 service on 17-April.
When I took the service in December 2010, I was forecast at 31/7 but was consistently getting 37/8. Now that Infinity has taken off in my area, it's more like 35/8 now except outside peak times. The TBB graph has always looked like this (the spikes on the right are my own speed tests): http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/s...15-04-2012.png So we'll see what Tuesday brings. I've been forecast 59/15 and we're c. 300m from the cabinet plus about 50m overhead. |
Re: Seph's BT Infinity Upgrade log
Mine's due to be doubled tomorrow. I'm forecast 53/15.7 though 90m from the cabinet.
Do you know what your IP profile is at the moment? My sync rate is maxed out at 39998/10000 at the moment, and maximum IP profile too at 38.72. Modem predicts max rate of 87112/27931. I'd expect, given your BT estimate is higher, you'll get the full 80. |
Re: Seph's BT Infinity Upgrade log
Hi Qasi.
I haven't yet gotten my own VDSL2 modem so I don't know my IP profile (unless you can tell me a way to get it). |

Re: Seph's BT Infinity Upgrade log
Doesn't hacking the modem require a replacement firmware? Or what?
Anyway the IP Profile is: 38.72 Mbps down (test got 32.86 meg) 10 Mbps up (test got 8.41 meg) Same IP profile as you. |

Re: Seph's BT Infinity Upgrade log
Thanks thenry. I've got that one. I just can't be bothered to put in new firmware. I was going to buy my own VDSL2 modem anyway (Draytek).
Cheers |
Re: Seph's BT Infinity Upgrade log
I've heard many good thinks about Drayteks. And good to see you're on the top IP profile, so you'll definitely get some improvement.
I wonder though, why did you go for the upgrade? Last I recall you only used your Infinity line gaming (and your ping monitor shows you rarely stretch it to its limits) so I wouldn't have expected you to want/need more speed - and you've had Infinity for a while so the recontract is quite significant. |
Re: Seph's BT Infinity Upgrade log
Fair question, qasi.
There are two reasons I upgraded: 1/ You know how it is! How can I compare double speed VM with double speed Infinity if I don't have both? 2/ When BT offer FTTH in my area, I'd prolly shell out a few hundred quid and after a short ewhile start paying for that by dumping VM broadband. BTW, I also use Infinity when, as now, there is FEC & noise at the CMTS making the VM circuit a bit iffy for ordinary stuff. I'm not a mega-downloader but I can do with the upload speed for work. |
Re: Seph's BT Infinity Upgrade log
Good to know.
P.S. My line rate increase just went through at 00:40, but IP profile seems stuck. Looks like the increases are happening shortly past midnight so less than 24 hours for you then :) |

1/ You'll recall the forecast was 59/15. Actual at 08:00 was 32/9 2/ IP Profile is 55.28/20 So the IP profile isn't in line with BT forecast. We'll "struggle" through the settling down period and report as and when. |
Re: Seph's BT Infinity Upgrade log
Well it's not *too* far off - 55.3 IP profile would indicate about 58mbps line sync speed - and the forecast is a forecast of line sync speed.
Some people have had improvements from manually resetting their modem and router once or twice, I would have expected more than that, as the estimates are in general very conservative. |
Re: Seph's BT Infinity Upgrade log
Yeah - but pretty schmitty. I've got 25/9 now.

Re: Seph's BT Infinity Upgrade log
Can I ask what router you are using?
|
Re: Seph's BT Infinity Upgrade log
DIR-615 in VM issued state and used for Infinity since installed 2010..
Just to bear in mind that a week ago on the 40 meg service I was regularly 37/8 and now always not more than 33/10. |
