One of a thousand

Just got a nice surprise:cool: A Tivo remote with my name on it. Apparently I'm one of 1000 customers to be given the Tivo. You get the remote in a nice box with your name on and a unique number to enter on a personalised webpage.

When you go on the site the women in the video talks to you personally and shows you your remote with your name on. Very cool. You then fill in a form for installation and have a link for a tivo forum( that dosnt appear to be working yet)

Regards

John.

Impressive. Did you register for TiVo or has this come completely out of the blue?

I registered but have also been in contact with the ceo's office in connection with the vip package and tivo, not sure which got me on the 1000 list.

I've just had a courier deliver one of these as well. I had pre-registered, but had not had any contact with the CEO's office. Now just waiting anxiously for the return phone call!

Thinking outside the box here.

If you pre-registered and havn't had a phone call yet then I can only assume you are getting TiVo for free!? They wouldn't send a personalised remote out of the blue and then expect you to pay £150 whether you want it or not.

Well done VM for treating your top tier customers well

So far looks like VIP50 customers only. If other VIP50 customers don't get it, then I'd understand them being a bit upset.

Not sure what pack i'm on but it was regular VIP and I've upgraded to 50mbit broadband. My bill before call charges is around £100/m. So yes if I miss out on this or the first wave of calls I'm not going to be happy. I've also been an S1 owner since 2001. This thread was just another slap in the face to be honest.

No letter or call for me either. VIP50 at full whack each month. Pre-registered my interest on day one. Surname near the top of the alphabet.

At least it's dry here... ;)

Well thats great news if its gonna apply to all VIP50's although I hope VIP20/30's are'nt far behind.

Nothing for me yet although not sure UKMail work here at weekends ..

By the way I signed up for VIP50 on the day its was announced as a package so not sure if those on the 50mb before that get first dibs or its random ... anyone know if they are doing it area by area dependant on staff who have been trained as it seems most getting it appear to be in the north around Yorkshire from what ive seen so far.

Easy to check if you are on the list. Just substitute your name for John's in the url on the letter photo he uploaded

I'm not getting one but, then again, I'm not VIP either

Hmmm, seems you need a unique reference number as well as a winning name to register. (I used the most common name I could think of, and it worked.)

That's a pitty.

I'd hope that the TiVo charge will end up being included in the VIP pack anyway, but it's nice how they've done this for current customers.

I can only guess there must be more than 1000 VIP50 subscribers so theres gonna be a few very unhappy peeps if some get it free and others dont ... maybe they have to stagger the VIP50 peeps or they in fact have a shortage of trained staff in some areas causing delays .. who knows ??? the customer is usually the last to know

I cant say I would be happy if some get it and others dont and I would be pretty unhappy even if i did get it and others didnt as it would be just wrong...

bit like the Lotto this .. not much chance of winning with the high odds .. lol ... great idea to give free boxes to VIP50 ... terrible way to do it if its only a select 1000

Confusion reigns but then we are talking about a big company so its nothing unusual

So we appear to have better than 1 in 41 chance of getting selected (better odds than winning the lottery by a good way). :)

Or putting it another way there will be 40,000 (I know, probably less) disgruntled VIP50 subscribers. :(

Guess we'll never know unless someone who's name doesn't work suddenly starts working.

That was my thinking too, got the vid to pop on a fair few John's, but nothing else.

I've got a pretty popular name so thought I might have a chance! Would be interesting to know the first names of the people who've got letters.

Im with you on that ... BUT i just cant see VM making that kind of a cock-up ... must be for all VIP peeps including VIP30 unless they gonna use Tivo to widen the gap in VIP50 & VIP30 ... but must be a level field for all on the same package or it will be mutiny...

cant believe VM would be that silly .. must be a staggered introduction is the only sensible conclusion i can bring myself to think right now ... fingers crossed .. lmao

Re: One of a thousand

There's nothing wrong with doing a random selection of a 1000 VIP50 customers to get this, but they should have made it public before they did it. Then, everyone would have known what was going on and accepted that some would get it and others wouldn't.

Just like when they sent me an email after registering for TIVO, saying, becase I'd registerd, I would be one of the first to get it, they should also have said, after TIVO S1 oners.

There is too much being hidden about this Tivo launch and it's irritating long term, loyal customers IMHO.

I feel exactly the same as others, I'm pleased for people who have got it and to be honest VIP 50 customers give Virgin nearly £100 a month so why shouldn't they get it first. But I'm a VIP 50 customer and without meaning to chuck my toys out of the pram I would be very annoyed not to get this offer.

I'm not one to threaten to leave a company but it certainly would make me evaluate things when my contract is up at the end of this month.

May be over 40,000 50MB customers, but this looks something for VIPs (TV/Phone/BB) only which will be much less in numbers?

So looks like there is an order of priority, Tivo1 first, VIP50 now, hopefully XLTV triple customers now (because that is me!!).

I asked

Quote:

Also are you able to shed any light on the criteria of the 1000 customers That received a TiVo remote through the post? Was it random selection of everyone or just a random selection of people on VIP50?

I ask as there are many existing customers that would love a shot at it yet some people who received one have only been a VM customer a matter of weeks. I know they would still be classed as "existing" but you get my point.

Many thanks*
And got

Quote:

Customers who registered their interest for the TiVo box and subscribe to the VIP package where the customers that had the remote sent to them as a marketing strategy.* These customers will be contacted once the roll out of the TiVo box has been confirmed and yes they will be classed as existing customers and subject to the relevant costs.

Yes, I'm also pretty annoyed at this utter shambles of a so-called rollout. VM get £106/m for service charges from me, plus call charges on top, I've been with them 12 years, have been an early adopter of all kit paying though the nose, field tested stb software, jumped on the pre-registration forms back in December and nothing at all. Personally I think it should have been a first come, first served thing, but no, as usually VM seem to be making a handful of people happy whilst annoying the majority.

This will put the cat amongst the pigeons. I received a remote this morning but am not a VIP50 subscriber. Only have 20meg BB. I didn't register either. Must be completely by luck. Cool though only heard about TiVo after looking it up this morning.

TIVO should be fully rolled out to all existing customers now , it seemed a great way of locking people into contract again and stop them leaving to Sky , but as usual another shambles from VM. Who makes these decisions at the top.

so from 1000 VIP50 customers (what we thought) ... it now appears its 1000 random customers of which some didnt even pre register ???? well VM you are the weakest link ... what a shambolic mess if its all true

needs confirming of course ... but ... tut tut VM

But what if you have afairly common name i.e. John Doe and get the personal message.

Does the network pick up that you are the correct 'John Doe' when using your home broadband or will you have to wait until a remote arrives?

you get a letter containing a personalised code that has to be entered on the site .. only the real John Doe would have this code ... i believe :dozey:

This is correct. You receive a code to be input and you can then confirm you would like to have a free box. Now have to wait for a call back to arrange installation.

Where do you find all the email addresses?

i can see a class action lawsuit on the horizon if 1000 peeps get it free and the other 19000 pre regiistered have to pay .. lol .. certainly unfair and more so if its peeps who didnt even register an interest and are not on VIP50 like Dunt ( not doubting you Dunt but many silly people do troll false info to cause trouble )

erm, no - easily justified as a marketing campaign, with customers chosen at random from the appropriate pool; it's done all the time.

We aren't in the USA - we don't have class actions in the UK.

Re: One of a thousand

I wouldn't dream of it. Don't get me wrong I am a VIP customer of 4 years but I've not got the 50meg BB only the 20meg. Also genuinely not heard of TiVo until this morning so definitely didn't register for it.

I'm guessing that high paying customers were put into a raffle and 1000 lucky winners are going to get it for free. At the end of the day they are not going to give it away to a lower package holders as it is an expensive product.

Not fair to everyone I agree but we are probably going to be beta testers to iron out any early bugs.

its all a matter of personnal opinion i know ... but i for one would not accept it as justified ... i dont expect privaledges above and beyond other customers paying the same as myself BUT i do expect the same treatment as they receieve wether thats free connection , free equipment or a free email addy ... its just simply wrong to treat customers differently based on pure luck and chance especially when the customer doesnt even know its happening..

as for class action .... i may have chosen the wrong wording .. but here in the UK groups of people do take out lawsuits as a collective against companys .. probably a better word is group action ?? and in the world we live in i can see someone starting one off (not me personally but someone would)

All IMHO of course so no need to bicker or fight over it :D

Seems a lot of bad feelings towards VM on here recently this just shows how wrong they've got the TIVO launch and the fact they don't relay info to customers.

I can't believe it, I'm fuming. I've just realised the remote has the mrs name on it. Never going to get to watch what I want now.

Well i know that i could be getting the free Tivo as i tried my name on the URL earlier in the thread and got the personal message, however, I don't know how may virginmedia customers have the same name as me.

I just need to wait for a remote to arrive. If it does, it does. If it doesn't then it doesn't.

I will admit to enjoying the excitment of possibly getting a free tivo.

TBH if VM have chosen 1,000 VIP50 customers to get a free TiVo, then there is nothing any "class action" or court can do. It may seem unfair to the ones not chosen, but VM is a private company and if they choose to do that, then they can.

I'm sure more things are coming......

But why not make some kind of announcement saying 1000 lucky people have been picked at random and go on and say the rest of the rollout plans it's been a complete disaster so far.

I'd say that the fact that everyone's talking about TiVo suggests that it's been anything but a disaster.

probably because of the reaction of the peeps that don't get it first.

some seriously sour grapes going on here.

Virgin have selected a 1000 people as a marketing campaign, great idea and good luck to everyone.

Why are people complaining that the haven't been selected? If you are not selected what exactly have you lost, how have you been disadvantaged?

I hope people complaining who are lucky enough to be selected will decline the offer as they seem to think it is really unfair.

Do you also refuse any random acts of kindness as well, as they would patently unfair to everyone else.
