Recommended Android apps

Thought it might be time to have a thread on this subject as I couldn't find one.

Anyone got any tips for top Android apps - or rubbish ones for that matter?

The wife's looking for an app which provides alert reminders for things like missed calls and text messages as her phone strangely doesn't appear to have that facility. We're reluctant, however, just to download stuff without knowing if it's any good, or more importantly might cause problems so any recommendations would be very welcome.

Re: Recommended Android apps

Would help if you told us the phone, on me Galaxy S, SMS Popup has a reminder function.

I also use.

3g watchdog for 2/3g data usage.

Quick Settings, one click control for wifi, 2/3g, bluetooth, brightness, etc.

Advanced Task Killer, improves battery life by killing unused apps, set it to auto kill on the highest setting when the screen closes.

Drocap2, for screenshots.

Droid Wall, firewall.

appsaver, saves all your apps incase you have to stick them back in for any reason.

Save MMS, auto puts the pics etc from a mms on your sd card.

Loads more...

Re: Recommended Android apps

Sorry should've been clearer. ;)

The wife has an LGGT540 Optimus but whilst we'd like some specific suggestions for that phone. She has a few already but wants something to offer a periodic audio reminder of a missed call or text. It's a feature she's found really useful on her old phones and is missing it terribly. (I'm also keen for her to have it so that she can't keep pretending she didn't realise I'd been trying to get hold of her... :) )

However, hopefully, this thread could be used for all Android phones or is that unrealistic?

I'm sure there are recommended sites for downloading these things so a list of those might help people like us who don't know much about these things and don't want to get caught out downloading things which aren't quite what they seem from sites which aren't safe. Where did you download your apps from?

Acathla 01-09-2010 13:39

Re: Recommended Android apps

Note that some of the apps Wayfair listed are only available for 'rooted' phones.

You'll want to download your apps form the Market - the only official source of android apps. Also have a look at www.appbrain.com for a web gui of market contents.

For your specific issue, have a look at 'Missed Call' by Anno - it might offer the functionality you require.

As for general apps I use too many to start to recommend ones - it really depends on your requirements. The most frequent;y used apps on my phone are:

Twitter
Facebook
NewsRob - Sync with Google Reader
Record IT - Sky+ Remote Record (although Sky now do their own free version)
Subsonic Music Streamer - need to run the Subsonic server software to be of any use
Soccer Livescores - Up to date footy scores

Other useful apps may include:
TripAdvisor
IMDB

---------- Post added at 13:39 ---------- Previous post was at 13:37 ----------

heck, if you really want a nosey, here's a list of everything on my phone at the moment. I am rooted so don't expect to get all of them on yours.

That's the first app I look for. Hardly any phones have it nowadays.

I used Missed Call for Android.

3G Watchdog is a must nowadays.

ChompSMS is very good.

If you do any kind of cycling/running: mytracks is free and logs all your data. Distance, average speed, average moving speed and elevation data/max gradients. Works seemlessly with google maps. Maps can be added later if you want to save on your allowance.

Apparently, that tough climb we did today has an 18.5% section in it

Heytell.... It is a push-to-talk messenger for Android and iOS. So imagine something like PingChat but sending short audio messages.

Tried it with an iPhone user in the states and worked great.

Avian...a game that uses birds as a weapon..puzzle game...use the birds to destroy various puzzle targets.

Addictive, this official version has 150 levels..i think.

Tip...tap screen just before bird hits target gives you additional special power..each bird has its own special power.

Go sms pro is a good text app, you can add folders and store texts which most others dont do.
Handcent is another good text app but cant add folders.
FotMob is good for getting latest football scores from any league.
Handbase is a very good database app.
Pocket Informant is a very good personal organiser, will be perfect when syncing with outlook is installed.

Some apps that I really like and couldn't do without.

Camera360 It has some fantastic effects.

Plume (Twitter client) I've tried loads of twitter apps for my Gallaxy S but always return to this one.

UK Newspapers Online Fast and free.

Unit Converter Very handy. I used it mainly for converting lbs and kilos into stone.

Apps 2 SD
Free up some space on your phones internal memory.

Printershare Excellent mobile printing solution, although I didn't that much for the key!! Also try Cypria the full version's cheaper.

ShootMe (Screen grabber) Just run it then shake your phone whilst on the screen you want to capture.

Tile Takedown I'm addicted to this word (Boggle) type of game, play other addicts all over the world.

Mp3 search & Downloader Sorted!

Is it worth putting any AV S/W on a HTC phone?

Also is there any app or built in S/W on the phone (Desire S) that allows you to keep track of passwords etc.

I've used Keepass on my laptops but would like something in my phone, as I sometimes use my credit card (mainly used for on-line) and cannot remember the PIN, on my SE W910i I had a code memo area that I stored it.

Gmote http://www.gmote.org/index

Install Gmote on Droid https://play.google.com/store/search?q=gmote
Install Gmote server on your PC/Laptop/Media centre http://www.gmote.org/server
Configure (takes a minute)
Run on your Droid
Take control with remote control, full keyboard/mouse

Allows you to control PC/Laptop/Media centre (fully) & along with the right video player app (MX or VPlayer et-al) stream media to your android device.

Apps that I use, carefully selected over time and what I feel are the pick of the bunch in each area

Airdroid (F)

Re: Recommended Android apps

Techguy's Apps G - M

OK I'm deliberately ignoring googles own apps youtube, facebook, twitter etc and focusing on independents as you will either already know about these ones or they'll be pre-installed anyway.

Gentle Alarm (P)

I know android has it's own (basic) alarm app, this one is... better.

An alarm clock shouldn't shell-shock you out of your dreams. That's why I created Gentle Alarm which tries to wake you up during light sleep using an optional pre-alarm.
Alarm clocks can't know if you are in light sleep or deep sleep (those movement based alarm clock don't work) but they can play a very quiet pre-alarm which you will only hear if you are in light sleep. If you are in deep sleep, you will simply sleep through the pre-alarm.
The pre-alarm plays 30min before you really want to get up (you can change that). If the pre-alarm wakes you up, you will be more refreshed than if you had slept until the main alarm because at that time you would have fallen back into deep sleep. Give it a try and I am sure you won't want to miss it anymore.
Of course, the app has all the usual features of a great alarm clock:
It can switch to a night display automatically when docking the phone. It can automatically shorten the snooze time with each time you press snooze. It can automatically create playlists of your favorite artist or genre. And it allows you to change colors, fonts, and backgrounds.

Instant Heart Rate Pro (P)

Sounds gimmicky but it does work.
Place the tip of your index finger on phone’s camera and in a couple of seconds your Heart Rate will be shown.
A real-time chart will show your every heart beat.
It uses your phones built-in camera to track color changes on the fingertip that are directly linked to your pulse. This is the same technique that medical pulse oximeters use.

Techguy's Apps W - Z

WiFi Status Bar Switch (F)

I got this because my SUPERHUB IS SO CRAP IT LOSES WI-FI A LOT
It adds a on/off for your Wi-Fi in your notification area so you don't need to go back to your home screen to turn it back on and potentially lose the work you were doing if you're low on memory/running a lot of apps (like me), it's a convenience thing. It's also got a really small memory footprint, unlike the other notification area status bar switches

WiFi Status Bar Switch toggles WiFi on/off.
The switch is placed in the status bar for easy access from other applications. You can also use it as a widget-like shortcut on your home screen.
When connected, the network's SSID is displayed after the title in the notification and if WiFi is on but not connected to a network, an icon is shown in the status bar.
ICS users: There is currently no way for me to sort the status bar icons like on previous Android versions. That means that there will sometimes be a blank icon in the status bar before other notifications

Turns your android phone into a Wi-Fi analyzer!!

Thanks. Some good looking apps. I will have a look later.
I have a Google/Asus Nexus and if you have a Logitech Touch HiFi system or Logitech Radios, then the Squeezebox app is superb.
Sad maybe, but I can control all of the above in my house from the Nexus over WiFi.
I am a big radio listener and station flicker and I can select stations to listen to on my kitchen radio on a single button press.
My Nexus was worth every penny just for this.

BBC I player app has just received a update.
Think before you update as it gets rid of the favourites function.

Facebook have finally released a native app for Android to replace the old HTML5-based one. The new one is like greased lightning compared to the old one.

Been holding off putting Facebook on my phone in case it tries to link up anyone and everyone from everywhere. Was bad enough the google account trying to add everyone I had ever emailed lol.

Here are some I use:

For file management:
ES File explorer: Use this most of the time for getting files from the PC/Laptop share or from my dropbox folder online, or just managing folders on the phone.
AirDroid: Use this if im sitting at the PC as it works through your browser but also lets you control your whole phone, send sms messages, organise contacts, edit ringtones etc.

Browser:
Using Maxthon Browser which is based on Opera. Also like Boat Browser

Cloud Storage:
Dropbox: Used this on my old phone as a way to move files between pc and phone but don't use it much now. Got a 50GB storage upgrade due to the Samsung phone so might use it more. You can share some of the files uploaded with others, while keeping others private. It will stream videos you upload, to your mobile.

Open to suggestions of better alternatives for cloud storage.

Messaging:
WhatsApp: I have an unlimited data plan and almost the same with texts and calls but get charged for picture/video messages. So I use this to send instant messages, pictures and videos etc for free to friends that also use it, as it just uses data.

HDR Camera+: Good for taking landscape pictures

0800 Wizard: UK mobile companies charge you to call freephone numbers, this app gives you a local number which are included on inclusive tariffs and routes the call onward.

Fing network tools: Finds all devices on your network and gives you info about them, option to ping them, wake on lan, port/service scan them etc.

Awesome On Off - Smart Screen: This wakes/unlocks your screen when you pick it up. I use it when im at home simple to save a button press. Can be set to wake at a certain angle, which is what I use, or by proximity sensor. Not too bad on the battery but I do turn it off when I leave the house.

Im looking for a decent app that changes the lock screen security when im out, so adds the PIN or pattern option for example. When I get home, want it to revert back to simple unlock. Looks like some apps work on GPS and some on home wireless connection. Seen a few apps in the market but wanted a recommendation with pro's/cons from someone who has actually used something like this. I did look at Tasker but the S3 has so many things built in that it seems overboard to use Tasker just for this.
