Sony: PS3 is deliberately hard to develop for..
Now, this comes from Cnet who are pro Microsoft , but they have based it on an article in the Official Playstation mag.
One of the complaints levelled at the PS3 (by a few developers, notably Gabe Newell from Valve) is that it is difficult to develop for. According to Kaz Hirai, the CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13506_3-10...ag=mncol;posts Quote:
But, this does not necessarily hold true. While I don't want to re-ignite the xbox/PS3 battle, the 360 has a very easy to use developers system, and yet developers are still finding ways to improve the capabilities of game engines. In fact, making the PS3 more difficult to develop for may actually backfire on Sony. Difficulty in developing means more development time. More development time means more cost. More cost means a need to sell more copies (unlikely if the console does not sell well) or higher costs for the gamers (which may negatively impact sales of the console). If the games do not recover their costs, that may make the developers question the viability of developing for the PS3. If they do stop, then that will mean fewer consoles sold. He also said Quote:
Yes, the hardware of the PS3 may be much more capable than the 360 (in fact, I believe it is), but that is a result of superior hardware, not that it is harder to develop for. |
Re: Sony: PS3 is deliberately hard to develop for..
I can see where the comments are coming from. It is worth developers discovering the true potential of the PS3 hardware than developing a half a job game that maybe just like a game on another console such as the Xbox 360.
Kill Zone 2 is a great example of developing a game and putting the release date back until the finished article is just right. Who knows who titles on the PS3 will look like in the future? |
Re: Sony: PS3 is deliberately hard to develop for..
must be a slow gaming news day, this story pops up every now and again, and has done for years. The PS2 was known to be pain after the PSOne being good to develop for, but that "won" that round, where as the GC was widely acclaimed to be easy to to develop for.
the Dreamcast was reputed to be good to develop for as if you wanted to you could use the Windows CE OS on it rather than coding straight to the metal so to speak. Good developers will make the most out of what they're developing for lazy ones will do simple cross platform games to try and make the most of their money but won't get full potential out of any system. Nothing new here, been happening for years. |
