Just been taking to TS. What a farce!

I'm not the only one suffering from this problem (connection periodically dies when it used "too much") and can only be brought back online by rebooting my modem.

Anyways i took the advice of somebody here and started to post in the support newsgroup. Apparently there is a utilisation problem on my UBR and the planned maintenance is........

26th March!!!!!!

Another two months of my connection dying everyday. :td:

It seems daft. I've just looked at the planned maintainence. With all the problems with oversubscribing and overloaded routers.....why are they just doing maintainence here and there - more like house keeping than upgrading the whole network structure....it needs much more effort to be put into it.

The page looks as it is a one man and a van going round maintaining some servers, here and there one a week. :dozey:

Your lucky

It took them 5 MONTHS, CEO's complaint and a very good Senior manager to fix the oversubscription on my UBR

Keep on at them and you will end up with speeds like this.

Wed, 16 Jan 2008 12:29:16 GMT

Test 1: 1024K took 444 ms = 2306.3 KB/sec, approx 19004 Kbps, 18.56 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 449 ms = 2280.6 KB/sec, approx 18792 Kbps, 18.35 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 423 ms = 2420.8 KB/sec, approx 19947 Kbps, 19.48 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 1043 ms = 1963.6 KB/sec, approx 16180 Kbps, 15.8 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 18481 Kbps, 18.05 Mbps

You must document everything. I ended up not paying the full amount because they admitted there was a problem, Never let them fob you off.

You need to use a newsreader, e.g. Outlook Express. Setup details for VM are here

http://www.virginmedia.com/customers...setting-up.php

and the newsgroup you need is

virginmedia.support.broadband.cable.

HTH

Cheers;)

The thing is, my speeds are fine. I get 4mb. But my connection completely dies and i can't even log in to my modem. Reboot and it's back to normal.... for a hour or two.

Just been having a similar chat within the newsgroup and this is a reply I got:

Test 1: 1024K took 3172 ms = 322.8 KB/sec, approx 2660 Kbps, 2.6 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 3110 ms = 329.3 KB/sec, approx 2713 Kbps, 2.65 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 3109 ms = 329.4 KB/sec, approx 2714 Kbps, 2.65 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 6188 ms = 331 KB/sec, approx 2727 Kbps, 2.66 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 2704 Kbps, 2.64 Mbps

Hi

From the information you have provided, you have an perfect connection. The
results are showing that your download is in excess of 80% of your possible
connection speed.

Would you find the above speeds on a up to 20mb service acceptable? Oh and pings to UK gaming servers at 80 - 140 m/s?

Has anyone got an adress or an email I can escalate this to or a newsgroup address for escalations at VM? Ta in advance.

Well he is stating that those are correct.

Hi

please have see below:

**Overall Average Speed = approx 18481 Kbps - this is kilobits - not
kilobytes, 18.05 Mbps, this is megabits not megabites - you are reading
this wrong, its - 2.25 Megabytes, as I advised in my previous response,
this connection speed is working as expected.

Have a look at the link below, this will help you understand megabits &
bytes, as you appear to be getting confused with the two.

http://edoceo.com/utilitas/bandwidth-calculator

Hi 20mb is the bandwidth and not the speed of your connection, this does not mean you will get 20mbps, the maximum download speed for a 20mb connection is approximately 2.3mega bytes per second, your advised your download speed was 2.64 Mbps, which would indicate a very good connection.
So he's trying to say that an "up to" 20mb connection should have a top speed of 2mb per second! Is that right or am I reading this wrong?

Shouldn't it read that an upto 20mb connection should be acheiving speeds of upto 20Mbps (Mega Bits Per Second) and not the current 1.36Mbps that I am getting?

Re: Just been taking to TS. What a farce!

It will ring until there is a tech to answer the call.
Can't have you on hold or music playing on a premium rate number.

After approx 3 mins ringing it will cut you off.

bliss 16-01-2008 20:17

Re: Just been taking to TS. What a farce!

I should have thought about that. I left my connection dead (yea it died again at about 7:30pm) and i want to have it that way when i call. So when i tell them to ping my modem.... they aint getting a reply from it.
