Whoever is responsible for the network planning of VM's network needs to seriously re-assess things.

If VM run their own Akamai servers, then yes it'd make sense they are advertised by their local DNS; it's *almost* acceptable for them to be messing around with DNS resolution for servers/domains they control but not anyone else.

For Youtube for example, they should not be doing any buggering around with DNS results, they should return what the Youtube server returns verbatim. And for me, strangely enough that's what happens - Google DNS returns the same results as VM DNS if I look up www.youtube.com

also with microsoft download servers as well (also akamai).

with google dns I was getting sub 10mbit speeds downloading windows 8, it used either a server over telia or abovenet both were slow, then when I changed to VM dns and flushed the dns cache I got a server that didnt go over any 3rd party transit and was much faster.

Just wanted to ad that this evening I was downloading stuff at around 500kbps, browsing this forum, wifey using facebook while listening to music on youtube with no buffering at all, and all from a 6 meg line

so I can only assume youtube doesnt actually require that much bandwidth to function correctly

Meh, for me VM DNS gave me a server in the Netherlands and Google DNS gave me one in Switzerland. Unlike yours which looks like west coast US - course it's going to be slow.

On second, third, and fourth attempts, VM DNS gave me Netherlands, Netherlands and Netherlands again, while Google DNS gave me Switzerland, USA, Switzerland. Mysteriously no sign of any UK Akamai servers.

yeah west coast but also the route it was taking was heavily congested as the speed was very unstable.

the ip that VM dns gave went straight to max speed and hovered around there probably only affected by my ubr congestion.
