Broadcast: A+E gearing up to launch Lifetime UK.

The following is thanks to Broadcast now web site:

Quote:

A+E Networks is aiming to extend its presence in the UK market with the launch of a female skewing channel.

The broadcaster, which currently operates the History, Bio and Crime & Investigation Network channels in the UK, is making the launch of Lifetime a “priority” over the next 12 months.

News regarding a Music on Demand search application.

Quote:

we will be introducing a Music on Demand search application, and it's currently scheduled for Q2. It looks great!

I'm also aware that we are working to integrate Music on Demand into the normal search functionality as well, though the App will be introduced before then. Both will make finding music much easier.

Okay, it's not rocket science, but it's a good point when people complain that "so-and-so channel has disappeared so we should get a price reduction".

I answer with "yes, but it only if you don't mind the price going up every time they add any channels".

They seem to disappear after that.

Out of curiosity though I would love to know what channel provider gets how much money out of say the XL subscription pot?

I'm sure it isn't fixed - so a popular channel that attracts viewers to XL will get more than a channel which most people wouldn't look twice at.

It's something I've always been curious about too but something we will probably never learn. Comedy Central + 1 and ESPN are both only in the XL package. Surely both channels don't get an equal slice of the XL pie? I'd imagine viewing figures must play part in who gets what also. Actually when looking through the XL package, there are some channels that are XL only that I wouldn't mind seeing go...... if it freed up money to land other channels such as SKY Atlantic or Premier Sports. For me the likes of The Horror Channel, Liverpool TV, Motors TV, Current TV, Travel & Living plus TV5 can all go. I've never watched any of those channels.

Yes l agree most of these other channels are useless but l suspect Virgin got them quite cheaply when they signed the carriage agreements.

Yeah probably. I'd imagine there is a lot of channels that fall into that category. Wonder if Virgin will renew the deals if and when the current contracts run out?

Upon closer inspection of the channel list, I'm astonished at how many channels I get that I don't ever watch. I'm all for choice and content but I want quality not quantity. The below channels don't ever get viewed in my house:

BBC Parliament
Best Direct
BID TV
Bloomberg
Boomerang
Boomerang + 1
Cartoon Network
Cartoon Network Too
Cartoonito
CBBC
CBeebies
Challenge + 1
CITV
CNBC
CNN International
Community Channel
Current TV
Disney Channel
Disney Channel + 1
Disney Junior
Disney XD
Disney XD + 1
DMAX
Eden + 1
Euronews
Extreme Sports
Film4 + 1
5 USA + 1
5* + 1
Gems TV
GOLD + 1
Home
Home + 1
Home & Health
Horror Channel
Ideal World
Jewellery Maker
Liverpool TV
Motors TV
Movies 24
Movies 24 + 1
National Geographic +1
NDTV
Nick Junior
Nick Jnr 2
Nick Replay
Nickelodeon
NickToons TV
Pick TV
Price-Drop TV
QVC
Sky LIVING +1
Sky LIVINGit +1
Speed Auction TV
Syfy +1
The Box
Tiny Pop
Travel & Living
True Entertainment
True Movies 1
TV5
Universal Channel +1
Watch + 1
Yesterday +1

That's 65 channels, more than a third of my current package, that I never watch. I couldn't even tell you what programmes air on some of these channels. If Virgin asked me would I be happy to lose these channels and in return they would deliver all the non-SKY missing HD channels, SKY Atlantic, Premier Sports and more On Demand content I'd bite their hands off.

I'd imagine most XL customers could identify between 30 to 50 channels they could live without.

For once I have to disagree, TiVo through wish lists has introduced me to old hammer horror classics and some really bad but good films on the Horror Channel!

Back to the question of XL subs I never understand why it seems the VM have to pay for channels to come on their platform and SKY get paid to put the same channels on their own platform, is it down simply to the potential numbers of viewers:confused:

My opinion on the kids channels would change if the Mrs. and I have kids. Even keeping the kids channels would still leave me with over 50 channels I don't watch.

It will never happen but I would love a TV service where I can pick and pay for the exact channels I want to watch. Your Freeview channels would be free then every channel you add thereafter costs around 30p per month.

Sorry but that is not quite accurate.

Anyone can launch a channel on the same satellite that Sky rents from Astra for its UK service. However, they have to pay Sky for the convenience of being their EPG and also - if they don't want to be FTA - to use Sky's encryption services.

With cable being a closed system, channels do have to pay VM to be included in their TV service.

The only bit I don't know is, as with other posts in this thread, what criteria decides which "pack" the channel goes into.

I also agree with Chad's point about the number of channels I don't watch but for which I have to pay because of the couple of channels I do want that are only available in the XL pack. But I don't suppose there's anything anyone can do about it. So that's that :)

It will never happen but I would love a TV service where I can pick and pay for the exact channels I want to watch. Your Freeview channels would be free then every channel you add thereafter costs around 30p per month.

I could identify at least 40 channels that we never watch. I to like your idea , but, as you say it will never happen.

Not quite horror but I would like to see the return of is Most Haunted. Loved the programme, especially their 2 and 3 night live specials. I don't care if people say it was all fake, I found it intriguing and entertaining. SKY finally released the rights to the show about 6 months ago but Yvette and Karl haven't found a new broadcaster:(

I'd imagine most XL customers could identify between 30 to 50 channels they could live without.

If you went to Sky, you'd get about 450 channels that you never watch!

Seriously, it makes economic sense to do it this way. If you have a family, there needs to be something for everyone. Also, if you want to get only the channels that you tend to watch, you will have to pay more for those channels otherwise everyone will get less choice. So you wouldn't end up any better off if they did it your way, you'd just pay as much for less.

They are saying Men and movies and Men and movies + 1 may rebrand as Sony Movies and Sony Movies+1 in May , I wrongly thought VM carried Men and movies channels apologies for the confusion , it was Movies24 I was getting mixed up with.

Thats the problem with multi channel TV you cannot please everybody myself i did used to watch current TV (now gone anyway )and the horror channel for me sky atlantic would be one channel i would never watch, plus premier sport has been offered a slot on VM as a premuim channel which they did not want apparently! i would not watch it in the XL large pack anyway,so as i said you cannot please everybody.:)

Yes it is interesting that Premier Sports did not take up the offer of a premium channel slot.

Is that because they are playing a waiting game to see if they can get into a pack later, or is it because Virgin's handling charge limit's the amount of money they would make as a premium and it is better for them to hope that the likes of me (who would love to watch the NRL and Championship Rugby League) would move to Sky.

I know people who have moved to Sky for just that reason, but then I guess you have to be a fan to understand.

There are no doubt many other reasons for people to move to Sky, Virgin should strive to limit these.

If that's true, and the channels aren't launching on Virgin outwith a TiVO app then that sucks big time.

It seems to be good news for anyone with a SKY dish:

http://corporate.sky.com/media/press...mpics_channels

The 48 new channels will be added to the Sports section of Sky’s Electronic Programme Guide from the 24th of July. The channels are free-to-air and available to any Sky home, including Freesat from Sky homes. The HD channels are available on any Sky+HD box and do not require a subscription, but do require an HD ready TV. Customers will require a Sky subscription in order to use Sky+.

Virgin need to deliver the same to their customer who don't have TiVo

Ouch. That will be hard to take, if Sky customers can record some memories from the Olympics and we can't. I have been on cable since day one but some times it is hard to stay loyal.

I am sure we will get all the streams but as nstokes mentioned, as an app, we may not be able to record them. Surely straightforward channels which can be recorded when you are out would be a better solution for the Olympics.

I think it's incredible that all current SKY customers will be able to access all streams whilst at the moment only Virgin TiVo customers will have access. As per the last figures only 435,000 Virgin customers have TiVo. What on Earth are Virgin doing? At the moment they are alienating 3,500,000 of their paying TV customers simply because they don’t have the most up to date PVR.

Virgin must launch the streams as linear channels for VHD and V+ customers. As a TiVo customer myself, with V+ in my bedroom, I want to be able to access all of the Olympics regardless of what box at home I’m watching on. I pay my TV license and a high end subscription and expect full coverage, and the ability to record the events on both of my boxes.

Virgin are aligning themselves to the Olympics very neatly with their logo being changed to incorporate the British flag, using Usain Bolt in their ad campaigns and their deal with the London underground to bring free Wi-Fi to passengers during the Olympic period. It would be such a shame for them not to deliver the biggest show on the planet, live from our shores, to all 4,000,000 of their TV customers. In fact it would be a scandal if they didn’t.

I expect a press release from Virgin soon about this.

I believe all those streams are supposedly available to freesat customers also with Sky picking up the satellite distribution costs

Many of those discussions are still continuing, but the BBC and Sky have announced today that they've come to an agreement that will deliver the 24 channels to all Sky homes. No information from My insider yet on if the extra BBC Sports Channels will also be on non TiVo boxes - more if I get it.

Freeview Update.

Tonight just after midnight viewers in the London will lose BBC Two from Analogue TV then ITV1 London will move to Channel 2. Freeview viewers in London will need to retune their TV set or Boxes by 6pm tomorrow. Plus everyone who has gone Digital Only will find 4Seven on Freeview Channel 47.

(NOTE: Some viewers with Virgin may have Freeview on their TV Set or in other rooms.)

I really hope that Virgin will launch the BBC Olympic streams as linear channels for all their customers.

Otherwise it will appear that while Sky are providing the Olympics to their and Freesat viewers as a public service, Virgin are using the Olympics as a marketing tool for Tivo.

Please have a discussion without the bickering and little digs at each other.

I don`t know why Media Boy bothers posting up his "coming soon" thread as it always ends up in the usual Amigos posting ***** too each other.

l am sure things are coming soon but the question is how long is a piece of string and also my answer to people who complain about MB's posts is that he does it for nothing and works hard to do it so if people don't like it then as someone else said don't bleedin read it.:)

Sorry -I for one are not complaining about MB , if nothing is happening & that is no ones fault ( well perhaps Virgin) I personally do not find rumors that interesting & tend to skip read that.
However that does not negate my point that if we ALL stopped posting banter while we wait. This thread would fall off the page,so to speak :erm:

The previous moderation post was a general one, aimed at everyone, not specific individuals. I would remind you all that this forum takes a dim view where moderation posts are ignored. If anyone continues to post arguing about who called who what, or otherwise cannot be civil to each other, they will find themselves on the receiving end of infractions.

Some posts will be deleted or edited.

Wow, for a minute there I thought we might discuss whether Virgin has a duty to provide public broadcasts of the Olympic Games, paid for by the licence fee, to all it's customers.

I am very grateful that Media Boy has raised this issue with people within Virgin.

That is certainly an interesting question, Emel. But not one for discussion in this thread :)

It's only duty is to it's shareholders, surely?
