Is the BBC website down?

Just wondering if anyone else is having problems getting on to www.bbc.co.uk

I've been unable to access it since at least 7am this morning

Is it down or could it be a routing issue

Haven't found any other websites I'm unable to access and everything else appears OK

Anyone else around Stoke on Trent unable to access it?

I've just rebooted my modem and it's back !!!!

Maybe just a coincidence - seems like there could be some routing issues out there though

Re: Is the BBC website down?

I had problems accessing the BBC main site this morning.
The last few days the main BBC.co.uk domain had problems. First the refreshing because /ok? was appended to the end. Now it just doesn't plan work.
I suggest you just try news.bbc.co.uk instead.

Very, very slow here. Was down completely at about 0200 this morning.

Feels like a DDOS attack - the BBC was hit by a major one almost exactly a year ago: http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/...rs-ddos-attack

Its not working for me in Birmingham UK. Have spoke to a bloke on the Virgin Media helpdesk who is unable to understand the english language. He says it works for him fine and not me. Probably would work if he isnt in the UK!!!!!!!!!!

He declines there is any issue and its not on the Virgin Media Status Page.

P.S the issue has been effecting facebook.

Also I woke up to find my internet dead, had to reboot my modem

www.bbc.co.uk is very slow to load on my work connection (BT). News seems to be running better but still a bit sluggish.

The BBC have a whole slew of servers and Ip addresses, but just for comparison I'm seeing 212.58.251.197 for www.bbc.co.uk (which isn't working very well) at the moment.

The Help Desk bloke was trying to blame it on the SSL 2.0 Option in Internet Options (IE).

They are upto the normal tricks, being rude and ignoring any comments I make. It took 4 attempts for him to understand my telephone number:

No 4997!

3997?

No its 4997?

oh 3997?

No the phone number is *** 4997

Update: Had 2 hours on the phone with Virgin Bangalore call center , totally useless , their tick box list assumes problem my end when its thiers. It all came back on line later on this evening but has gone again, very weird. Can't face more confusing conversations today, hope its fixed tomorrow. Amazing thing is they said I was the first to complain when obviously others on here had similar problem.

Try this site http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/

If it comes back that it is up and you cannot see it then it will be a routing issue which could be anywhere on the network.

As I said above I have tried to access the BBC using 7 different browsers without any issue.

If it is a routing issue then setting a proxy may work as a temporary fix.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Proxy for IE

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The proxy goes in your browser.

The proxy to use is : webcache.virginmedia.com

The port number is : 8080

How to set up proxy in Internet Explorer 6/7

Step 1 ? On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options, click the Connections tab, and then click LAN Settings.
Step 2 ? Under Proxy server, click to select the Use a proxy server for your LAN check box.
Step 3 ? In the Address box, type the IP address of the proxy server. (e.g. proxy.abc.com or 202.188.17.24)
Step 4 ? In the Port box, type the port number that is used by the proxy server for client connections (by default, 8080).
Step 5 ? You can click to select the Bypass proxy server for local addresses check box if you do not want the proxy server computer to be used when you connect to a computer on the local network.
Step 6 ? Click OK to close the LAN Settings dialog box.
Step 7 ? Click OK again to close the Internet Options dialog box.

Proxy for Firefox

Here is a proxy add on for Firefox https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2464

To enable proxy settings in Firefox 3.0

Select Tools -> Options. ( In some Firefox browser's you have to go to Edit>Preferences usually in LInux )
Select Advanced.
Open the Network tab.
In 'Connections' area click 'Settings' button.
Select Manual Proxy Configuration radio button.
In the necessary proxy field(s), put the same settings in the HTTP field then
Click 'OK'

You have a DNS problem. VM seem to be having some issues with their DNS servers lately.

Add a secondary/backup DNS server and you should be fine. Google's works well and is easy to remember (but some people disagree with their data protection policies)

It is a routing issue that can be rectified very easily as in changing the proxy in your browser or the DNS servers as above.

Followed given instructions from yesterday on how to change proxy/dns server, and the BBC site which was playing up is now fine. I didn't tick the box to use it for all protocols - should I have? I just put it in the http proxy box. (Firefox)

BBC only really provides HTTP services anyway, so you should be fine.

bbc.co.uk unavailable for me here in St Albans this evening. Works fine if I switch to my Vodafone dongle, so it's definitely a VM problem.

If a site is up that normally solves it and you would be advised to do exactly that if you rang up.

Rang Virgin and their solution was to use webcache.virginmedia.com (port:8080) as a proxy. This sounds like a bit of bodge job to me and now I've started getting a 'cannot connect to proxy server' error message every now and again

It is the same proxy that I posted above and not a bodge job, you can try the google version or even Open DNS.

The BBC website has not worked for several days here at Watton At Stone, I seem to be able to get a page but it is several days old.

I have only heard of this issue in this thread as no one has called in and spoken to me and nor do we have it listed as a fault.

The will a routing issue somewhere that is affecting you as I can get it on all 7 browsers on my computer.

They will check the connection is working and make out a report but as for it being fixed as an individual fault I very much doubt it as sooner or later the routing will fix itself.

They will advise you to add a proxy to your machines.

hi,

final straw !
i have been using a web based traing site www.activ-training.co.uk/training over the last week which has cost me nearly £200,now today getting dns errors.
RANG 150 told them bbc & url above not working.
had to enter webcache.virginmediacom & port 8080 into my ie connection settings under the LAN tab.

ALL OK NOW...............

the end

Check the Virgin Media forums then. Plenty of threads on it there. The engineer that just visited me to sort out an unrelated problem said he was aware of the DNS problem.

It is a DNS fault. nslookup will NOT work from a machine using VMs DNS. We've had to add Google or another 3rd party DNS to work around it.

The thing is, we shouldn't have to. This is a fault, and as far as we can see so far, it is national, and not down to local routing problems.
