60M, Should I be concerned?
Hi, I recieved a superhub yesterday, set it up and after everything was updated on it I was able to get online without too much trouble.
When I first got set up I ran a few speed tests and I was rather surprised as the best result I could get was about 45Mb when I was expecting closer to 60Mb. the average speed test result was around 30Mb. I have also today downloaded a file via newsgroups which seemed to max out my connection. When connecting wirelessly via my wifes netbook speedtests come out at 5-7Mb but downloading the same file via newsgroups gave a speed of 25-30Mb (although I was sat within 2 metres of the hub at the time). Should I be worried about the speedtest results as i've seen other people on here with 60Mb getting speedtest results close to the correct speed. Here are my power levels etc, do they look ok? Re: 60M, Should I be concerned?
Hi,
Those power levels are fine. However keep an eye on it as theres currently a fault in TS17 thats effecting them (some more than others), See http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12...wer-level.html for more info. It depends where about your in Thornaby I suppose. There is some congestion on ubr13 if you are on that which explains your speed with speedtests. |
Re: 60M, Should I be concerned?
speed tests can be a bit iffy and should only be used a guide. If you are getting full speed through newsgroups (wired) then you know everything is ok. You can't count on the shub's wireless abilities, they are notoriously poor. If you think you are going to use wireless a lot and are looking for speed then you need to get yourself a new router.

Cheers, looks like i'm on ubr13 (stkn13).

Re: 60M, Should I be concerned?
Do a wired test to rule out wifi issue

The General is right about speed tests, you'll need to try a few servers before you find one capable of hitting 60meg, especially during peak hours.
I was upgraded to 60meg yesterday, and whilst some of the speedtest.net uk servers only give 30-50meg results, if I pick a good one, I hit around 60meg every time (wired or wireless) , best results are just over 62meg. Try a few of the servers ;) |
Re: 60M, Should I be concerned?
Although more and more are supposed to be good fot 100mbit speed tests, I find the more reliable for me are the London servers

Agreed! Try the Derby one though, I just got 3 meg down on my 60 meg connection on that  ...switched back to a London server and all is good again :D |

Re: 60M, Should I be concerned?
have you tested it from another ISP?
---------- Post added at 14:03 ---------- Previous post was at 13:58 ---------- see this: https://support.speedtest.net/entrie...t-net-location they require at least 100mbit connection, and they do regular health checks, so if the aberdeen server was underperforming it would have been taken offline, seeing as ive just done a test at 15 down and 2.7 up I can only assume its a VM congestion problem, strange routing took me through 30 hops via london for some reason VM run their peering red hot |
Re: 60M, Should I be concerned?
I may be playing devil's advocate here, but in response to the original question - 'should I be worried if I'm paying for a 60 meg connection and a speedtest site tells me I'm getting 45'
I would say - Use it for your normal day to day, if you it works fine and you don't notice anything wrong, like browsing works without issues and you can watch the vids of your choice without having problems - then no you don't need to worry. Most people will never really see a big difference between say a 20 meg and a 100 meg connection unless they are downloading extremely large files on a daily basis, and even then it'll mean something that would take 10 minutes before will now only take 5... |
Re: 60M, Should I be concerned?
couldnt agree more dude, but you defo notice the difference when you do use it. The time I have saved over the years going from 1mbit, 1.5mbit, 3, 10, 20, 50 and now 100 is unbelievable
