OK to use test socket for extended use?

Have been having a few intermittent land line problems lately. These include no dial tone but pressing the buttons on phone make an odd noise or when someone calls us they hear one ring and then nothing. I've tried this with my mobile and I think the nothing they hear is actually them getting connected to us even though we don't hear or pick up our phone, is that possible? Was phoning my mum earlier and also got regular disconnects.

I was going to use the test socket behind the faceplate for a while to see if that affects anything. I thought it was a line fault as I've tried our phone at a neighbours when we had the problem and it worked fine. A couple of weeks ago I noticed our phone cable was out of its socket and my wife said she hadn't removed it. I don't know if maybe our 4 year old has pulled it out and maybe damaged cables behind the main faceplate. That's why I'd like to try the test socket for a while in case the wiring in the main faceplate has been damaged.

Is there any problems using the test socket to send/receive calls as I'd like to test as much as possible before calling someone out.

No problem at all; the face plate plugs into it just so you can hard wire extensions to the face plate but disconnect them easily for any testing.
