Re: 2017 Formula 1 Season Thread
An F1 team going under? Completely rare occurrence. Something needs to change though. On the less sympathetic side of things. Why are people continuously allowed to enter the sport with back marker teams that evidently can't cover the cost of being such a team. I get that they've got a vision and it'll happen in the future but they clearly underestimate the true cost vs waiting for that.

Back when there were two "minnows", you could judge them against each other, in a race of their own like the days of the Turbo vs. non-Turbo cars.

Re: 2017 Formula 1 Season Thread
McLaren are slowly but surely falling apart gradually as each year passes.
Mercedes are once again a step ahead. The advantage of being way out in front of the switch when it occurred. Everyone may have caught up with the 2016 Merc but the 2017 is again a step ahead of that. |
Re: 2017 Formula 1 Season Thread
Yes it is not looking very good for McLaren again, i was hoping there would be a huge improvement.
|
Re: 2017 Formula 1 Season Thread
When the dust settles and the rules change for the better, Hamilton will return home to McLaren, it's inevitable, only then can I see McLaren getting out of this mess they're in, back to the silver livery too I hope. People hate the guy, although it's common to hate the guy that wins apparently. But by god he can drive a car, this lad can drag cars way above their expected finishing position and was single handedly keeping McLaren relevant just before he left.
|
Re: 2017 Formula 1 Season Thread
I would respond to that, but I did promise I wouldn't say anything negative about Hamilton this season.
Sad to see McLaren going backwards not forwards. Again this season, I will be cheering on ABM (Anyone But Mercedes) as one team dominating just gets boring as Hell after a while. I said it when Ferrari dominated, I said it when Red Bull dominated. |
Re: 2017 Formula 1 Season Thread
With the Honda engine, it would need more than Hamilton back at McLaren, it really needed another team to be running it, maybe one of the minnows (oops, there aren't any left now). When McLaren were tops, they had the Mercedes engine, and since the season changes don't seem to be much to do with engines, it's likely the Mercedes is still going to be the one to beat.
Renault have also been disappointing, especially compared to Red Bull with the Tag Heuer branded Renault engine (after they couldn't find an alternative engine supplier when wanting to move from Renault. And of course, poor old Sauber, with the minnows gone, the pressure is now on them. |
Re: 2017 Formula 1 Season Thread
I think McLaren may be even worse than last year based on the tests so far. Ferrari seem very very strong according to Hamilton.

Re: 2017 Formula 1 Season Thread
Based on what we have seen in testing, i would say Ferrari are a genuine threat to Mercedes dominance which is a very good thing in my opinion, we could do with a few more strong teams to spice things up even more though! Roll on the Australia on March 26rd, lets get this season rolling!
|
Re: 2017 Formula 1 Season Thread
Almost betting Mercedes were sandbagging the car.
|
Re: 2017 Formula 1 Season Thread
Good result in qualifying for Lewis, and it is nice to see the Ferrari's so close, could make for a less boring season!

That's all I want this season, if Hamilton has to win could it at least be competitive and not a complete whitewash.

Re: 2017 Formula 1 Season Thread
Looks like we are going to see a real battle between Ferrari and Mercedes this season.
As for McLaren, and the 3rd year of the Honda engine, well Alonso said it "never had less power". The first season, teething troubles were to be expected, but it's getting beyond a joke when it has neither power nor reliability. The Honda engine is in one team only, with no works team. Mercedes are the best team running Mercedes engines Ferrari are the best team running Ferrari Red Bull (under the re-brand as Tag Heur) are the best team with Renault (the Renault team being last other than the 0 pointers) |
Re: 2017 Formula 1 Season Thread
I agree, it looks like Honda will be supplying Sauber in future too though so that must have got Sauber a good deal.

Re: 2017 Formula 1 Season Thread
Seriously wondering if Alonso will be at McLaren by end of the season. He's not happy with the car, as he shouldn't be. At a minimum, McLaren must be getting points each race. They are diabolical. It's almost as if they have no desire any more.

I get that, but McLaren should be demanding more from Honda. I don't know, maybe I see everything in black and white terms when there are shades of grey to be seen. But I think it would be a shame if he left the sport like this. Surely a move to another team might be best for him? Maybe Force India or Sauber.

|
Re: 2017 Formula 1 Season Thread
I believe, and this is only from playing the F1 game on the xBox One, there is one DRS zone and it is along the pit straight.
Funny how now Ferrari have cottoned onto the Mercedes design and are putting their spin on it, they are cheating. Yet Mercedes never cheated when they were dominating? (Not saying they were, but if now Ferrari are winning and are being called cheats, why wasn't the same accusation leveled at Mercedes, Red Bull, McLaren etc when THEY were the dominant teams?) |

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/formula1/40535533 And according to the gossip columns, Mercedes looking to ditch Bottas at the end of the season and replace him with some unknown Spanish driver called Fernando Alonso. Oh no, wait, they drove together at McLaren. If that move DOES happen, then the real fight won't be between Mercedes and another team, it will be who is more aggressive out of Fernando and Lewis. |

Re: 2017 Formula 1 Season Thread
Looks like they may be hoping for a renegotiation.
Only other circuit that comes to mind is Brands Hatch, which hosted F1 some time back, but may well need significant alterations for the modern era. |
Re: 2017 Formula 1 Season Thread
There's no track capable of bringing F1 there without significant losses via needed alterations, none of which could afford it and that's without noting they can't make a profit on the race itself.
At the current cost the British GP can't be hosted anywhere without a different funding source. Governments and Arab businessmen are throwing their money at other track hosts. Silverstone any other track in the UK has no such luxury. I have to back Silverstone on the decision. You can't keep hosting a race in which you're doing deeper into the red as the contract rolls on. If Liberty Global want F1 to descend to the same levels of FIFA then let them. Baku is a horrible track, an opinion not just confined to myself but money talks. If Silverstone can't get a profitable plan from a renegotiation then it'll just continue F1's trend towards the big dollar, something that's been annoying me since Sky were allowed to purchase up the TV rights despite Channel 4 being in the running. |
Re: 2017 Formula 1 Season Thread
A Formula One season without a British GP would be a crying shame IMO.

Renault have told Red bull they don't wish to supply them with engines after 2018, this means they may endup using Honda as their engine supplier. http://bbc.co.uk/sport/formula1/41265779 |
Re: 2017 Formula 1 Season Thread
The story I read this morning on Mail thinks that with Toro Rosso being supplied by Honda from 2018 that Red Bull will be using them too. However, with Honda being so useless for McLaren what makes Red Bull think they will be any better than Renault engines?

Re: 2017 Formula 1 Season Thread
Singapore GP
Carnage at the start! Off the start, the Ferraris of Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel sandwiched the Red Bull of Max Verstappen and all three make contact. The fast-starting Raikkonen hit Verstappen and speared sideways into his team-mate. Raikkonen then continued in a damaged car and collected Verstappen again at Turn One. They then collect Fernando Alonso in the secondary collision. All three men are out. Safety car is out Ferrari are blaming Vertapeen :D That like not blaming a puppy sitting next to a pile of poo Oh and Lewis wins, and has a 28 point lead. Vettel and Rikkonen to blame, even if you're blind you can see that. |
