92-Year Old Veteran Pirates Movies to Help Soldiers
Piracy is rampant in the US military.
Because the MPAA refuses to deliver entertainment to troops overseas, soldiers are forced to pirate. Some download movies via the Internet, others buy bootleg DVDs, and there’s also talk about sanctioned “Morale” hard drives full of warez. Recognizing the problem a 92-year old WWII veteran is also helping out. Hyman Strachman, or “Big Hy,” is sending thousands of illegally copied DVDs to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. The New York Times has the full story, which is definitely worth reading. Worth noting is the MPAA’s response to Big Hy’s pirate operation. “We are grateful that the entertainment we produce can bring some enjoyment to them while they are away from home,” a spokesman said. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/27/ny...hero.html?_r=2 :D |

I am reminded by the MASH series where the weekly film for the camp was always delayed, damaged or incredibly dated. Not a morale booster at all.:erm: |

You are perfectly correct. They may want it. But they are not forced to steal it as a result.

Re: 92-Year Old Veteran Pirates Movies to Help Soldiers
Well this is a problem for the mpaa because if they do go after this guy pirating will get it's biggest boost ever and if they don't they basically lose the battle against piracy they are stuck between a rock and hard place and i cannot think of any organisation that deserves it more.

Re: 92-Year Old Veteran Pirates Movies to Help Soldiers
This thread is full of emotion. Look that the thread title:
"92-Year Old Veteran" - How is his age or previous military service relevant? "Pirates Movies" - Pirate, the content industries favourite term of copyright infringement. "to Help Soldiers" - I take the point about morale, but better equipment might help the soldiers. A larger movie collection, not so much. The MPAA could go after him, but that wouldn't be a great PR move. That said the MPAA have shot themselves in the foot some many times, they must walk around on mushy stumps these days. |
