No surprise really, they had all the games last time (in 2021), the BBC had a few live games as well.

Found that out when I called them to make sure the 2nd TiVo box would be included. After asking for the 2nd TiVo box, TNT sports and netflix the price jumped from £74 to nearly £200, they're taking the piss

A reminder again that moving to Virgin V360 is not compulsory as part of a contract change unless you want to use the exclusive V360 apps (Disney+, Paramount+ etc). If you are happy with your channel selection & the operation of your boxes, you DO NOT have to migrate your boxes as part of the contract change. If you have the older 500Mb TiVO you can upgrade your boxes to V6 boxes without losing the TiVO features.

Won't be moving to 360 as moved to it when I renewed last time and quickly switched back to Tivo when I found out how shit it was

I wish open reach would make more of an effort with installing hi-speed fibre. I'm stuck with Virgin until they can get a fast enough speed to run sky stream.

I feel if Sky are set to launch a Tennis channel in March is would be far too early for Virgin to start test for it in January so I feel Virgin Media are set to launch HD Channels of the following Warner Bros Discovery UK Channels soon.

*CNN International HD
*Boomerang HD

OR:

Sky are set to have 3 events week of January 29th. Could be multi-court options alongside an existing channel that would be enough for a few weeks but I’m just guessing really.*

We may be losing even more channels
as Channel 4 is having to make cuts due to the worst downturn in advertising for 15 years.

Speculation is growing that part of the costcutting measures will include closing some channels and moving some to streaming only.

Personally I expect the Box music channels to be the first to go. They aren't Channel 4 branded, viewing of music channels continues to decrease and they are only available on Sky & Virgin.

We'll know more at the end of this month.

True, but there's more going than coming these days, but bills keep going up and up.

Even a FTA channel like That's TV 2 hasn't made it's way to cable, yet is on platforms that people don't pay for ie Freeview & Freesat.

Announcement by end of the month

It’s a curious situation and the paucity of Sky’ current offering is highlighted even further by Eurosport and Discovery+’s plans for 260 hours of live coverage from 17 courts at next week’s Australian Open, along with a full suite of shoulder programming.

SportsPro understands a more comprehensive plan will be revealed before the end of the month,

It was a thirty year deal with Virgin group when NTL Telewest signed the deal to use Virgin's name back in 2008 when Virgin took over Virgin Mobile.

The licensing agreement expires in April 2036 but reportedly have the option to end it with one year notice after 10 or 20 years.

So according to this, the earliest they could end the deal is 2026, not 2025. Media Boy is mistaken.

Re: Virgin TV (2024)

I suppose they could announce the ending of the brand officially later in 2025 having already given notice in April 2025 but with rebranding date of April 2026, O2 would probably be the new name if it happened.

All I can see this The licensing agreement expires in April 2036

Re: Virgin TV (2024)

As for April 2036 last mentioned in Virgin Media O2 2021 annual report page 20
https://news.virginmediao2.co.uk/wp-...ual-Report.pdf

I couldn't find it in their 2022 annual report

Mentioned on this link it can be terminated after 10 years with one year notice period

https://www.marketingweek.com/virgin...brands-future/

If it is anytime after 10 years rather than each 10 years , could terminated earlier than April 2026.

Obviously Virgin Media cannot control channel departures when channels decide to end broadcasting but VM never seems to add any new channels, thereby making their TV service of less and less value, despite the rip-off, inflation-busting price increases. I'm so glad that I've given notice to leave.

Replace them with what? TV channels are fast disappearing. Sky Atlantic is the only half-decent channel available we don’t get.

We need more streamers now. The only channels likely to be coming soon are FAST channels.

Not very inspiring, MB. And you may like to cross the +1 channels off your list. Virgin won’t be going for any of those. They, too, are on their way out.

New poster but any idea if this will make the red button option in HD? I know in the past the red button EFL games have always been SD on Virgin!

Thanks for compiling the list. I'm pretty much with Old Boy on this except I think VM should try and get MUTV HD and DAZN1 HD. That being said, having MUTV in SD is probably less painful for their long-suffering supporters than HD! :D

Bauer are kickstarting their Rayo platform https://hellorayo.co.uk/ where they can entice listeners to subscribe to their premium stations. Global seems to be doing the opposite, although they have their own platform, they are still maintaining a presence for their services on other platforms. As for News UK Broadcasting (formerly The Wireless Group) and Talk Radio, they still need to show their hand.

If anyone still has a Virgin or Sky box that can't record then it must be from the dark ages.

Well those streaming devices would likely have catch up and again +1 channels wouldn't be needed.

I just think they are a waste of band2idth and came at time before DVRs became the norm and catch up and on demand weren't really much compared to what they are now.

The comment I replied to did not mention +1 channels. My reply, therefore, was not about +1 channels, merely about newer devices from Sky & Virgin not having a recording facility without being from the dark ages. ;)

I was talking about normal cable and sky boxes not streaming ones.

Re: Virgin TV (2024)

As stated - both VM's and Sky's latest products do NOT have any recording facilties.

Both do have catch-up and it was said they don't need +1 channels. But both Sky's and VM's current linear boxes have the same catch-up apps as their current streaming boxes.

If the arguement is that if the stream boxes don't need +1 channels - then neither do SkyQ or the VM 360.

Nowadays, DVR seems to be from the dark ages - but UK Catch Up services do not provide a full catch up service.

Fair enough but that wasn't clear from "If anyone still has a Virgin or Sky box that can't record then it must be from the dark ages". The newer streaming boxes still pass as cable and sky boxes and don't have a recording facility. I don't have a horse in the +1 or the recording facility race.

I was once on the testing for Vodafones TV box that ultimately never lauched. It used an aerial for the main channels and WiFi for the pr3mium channels but with the ability to record programmes that were stored remotely on servers in Germany. BBC and ITV couldn't record but their catch up apps were available. It worked well and meant you could str3am recordings when not at home. This was around 2015. It worked well but a decision was taken mere weeks before launch to cancel it.

I still like to have DVR facilities on my Q or Virgin boxes to keep some films and shows. You never know when the streaming services will remove them. But with all the options available now +1 channels do seem rather redundant.

I did not even know about Sky Sports Red Button button launching via TV360 boxes until after it did happen.

Subscription pack codes have been added for 150 extra channels on Stream in the Inclusive channels, Essential Entertainment and Kids packs. Pack codes being added isn't definitive proof of the IPTV streams being added, so that will need to be confirmed. A provisional list available at https://ukcabletvchanges.blogspot.com/

The additional channels seem to include quite a few +1 timeshifts so, yeah, some of the user comments in this thread about Stream not having +1s didn't age well. :D

Don’t people have EPGs on their freeview/freesat compatible TVs? Or indeed, turn over to whatever HDMI port their Virgin/Sky STB is on “while they still exist” (as you put it).

You’re selling us a pup here, OB. The big advantage for subscribers was supposed to be we weren’t subsidising crap. Now we (all pay-tv subscribers on all platforms, including streaming) are paying more, getting less and the answer is for Virgin and Sky to give them a leg up?

The Freeview EPG is not that good, though, jfman. They are not up to the standard of Virgin’s or Sky’s and don’t let you see very far ahead.

As for the streamers, I have more good choices than I ever had before. You are only getting less on the TV channels.

I’m confused why on one hand it’s dated and on the way out yet it’s essential and only Sky and Virgin (themselves, on the way out) must step to give streamers the quality platforms to be on.

Quote:

And paying through the nose for it, OB. To the end user “the TV channels” is a meaningless distinction - less content is less content whether viewed on demand or otherwise.

"VM keeps everything new away from TV-only customers"

What are you talking about? What is all this new TV content that VM is keeping from you?!

The traditional pay TV market has been in heavy decline for some time, with the number of channels reducing significantly, and there's nothing that VM as a distributor can do about it except try to aggregate content from the streamers, as they are attempting to do.

They could arrange carriage deals for the channels that are missing to try and make up for the channels that closed.

Instead they have put up prices and taken away channels that are still broadcasting from the top pack ie children's channels, Asian channels & TNT Sports.

What missing channels are those?

I'm not aware of any significant pay TV with high value content missing from VM, except for Sky Atlantic (and we're getting many of the major series from that via Sky Showcase now). I am curious what you think we are missing out on.

I sympathise but there isn't much that can be done to bring new services to TV-only customers with legacy Tivo boxes. The boxes are just too old.

You should add TLC HD & QVC. The subs codes for those weren't added last night as they have been present but inactive for months/years, the actual channels didn't arrive at the same time as the subs codes. As TLC +1 and other QVC channels had subscription codes added last night, it makes sense that the main channels will be added with their siblings. So 152 extra services in total (so far).

Just speculating but they could add premium packages to Stream and add the missing Adult / Asian / Sports channels and Baby TV. Other than those, I dread to think. A lot of Test channels don't seem to have been added but they are probably testing features of the DVB-C network and simply not needed on Stream.

TNT Sport Extra channels are specified as unavailable in VM marketing but they have all had TNT Sport pack codes for some time, so perhaps something else that was meant to be added some time ago? The Adult PPNs will have multiple services if run the same way as the DVB-C versions. The landing slates used to advertise the services and act as a gateway to order them plus the off-EPG services carrying the actual content. There are also the PPV channels for Sports events etc. Radio is another section of the EPG with differences on Stream but I can't see the current solution being changed.
