Flat Earth Society

I was wondering if this would be better in the jokes section but as it is a lifestyle I settled on here.

Surely that should read "they've got members" from one side to the other side of the disk that we misguided souls have been hoodwinked into thinking is a spherical Earth!!!!

I actually know a Flat Earther, he looks quite normal, held down a very responsible job but is an absolute nutter. We gave him a Globe one Birthday, he was not very amused, it has lived in his downstairs loo for years. :D.

And Lisa Stansfield proved it in 1989. She went around the world trying to find her baby. Turns out he'd gone away, but she didn't know when or why.

Actually... it was already known the world was round then, the point in dispute was the size of the globe, and whether ships of his size would be able to sail the way around

From here : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myth_o...hy_of_Columbus

Quote:

The issue in the 1490s was not the shape of the Earth, but its size, and the position of the east coast of Asia, as Irving in fact points out
....
The disputed point was not the shape of the Earth, nor the idea that going west would eventually lead to Japan and China, but the ability of European ships to sail that far across open seas. The small ships of the day (Columbus's three ships varied between 20.5 and 23.5 m – or 67 to 77 feet – in length and carried about 90 men) simply could not carry enough food and water to reach Japan. The ships barely reached the eastern Caribbean islands. Already the crews were mutinous, not because of some fear of "sailing off the edge", but because they were running out of food and water with no chance of any new supplies within sailing distance. They were on the edge of starvation.[20] What saved Columbus was the unknown existence of the Americas precisely at the point he thought he would reach Japan. His ability to resupply with food and water from the Caribbean islands allowed him to return safely to Europe. Otherwise his crews would have died, and the ships foundered.

Exactly. If you think about it, if Columbus had believed that the earth was flat, sailing straight for the edge without any idea of how far away it was and without sufficient supplies to get back would have been a suicidal way to behave. He clearly hoped to make landfall somewhere he could replenish the hold before sailing back again. He just happened to believe that would be Japan, not an unknown landmass in the West.

Exactly, the reason they’re called the West Indies is because he set off West hoping to find a quicker route to India which he knew was in the East.

Otherwise we wouldn't launch rockets from the northern hemisphere, we could just take them to Australia and let them fall off into space.

We could just take them to Earth’s B-side and let them drop off into space?

I don't know how anyone can possibly think the earth is actually flat. Especially with all the evidence that says it is a round ball shape.

Simply head west or north and you will eventually end up back where you stated. That's a dead giveaway.

Photos taken in space also prove this.

I remember one of them being on this morning earlier in the year. Holly and Phil were nearly in stitches when he was talking.

If the Earth is round why doesn't all the water sink to the bottom

There are many who believe it though and try to rationalise it for you.
This is a bit long winded but comes up some interesting reasons though. I must admit I laughed most of the way through it. It's very entertaining theough!

‘True, but only if they had cause to think that the world is a globe, they might frightened of falling off the edge if they think the world is flat.’
‘But it is so obviously a globe’
‘To you and I, especially once the sorcerers had the arguments correct’

It had been over five hundred years ago that Karen the sorcerer had deduced the fact that their world was a globe, the argument went like this: If the earth is flat then if I watch a ship sail away it should just get smaller and smaller with distance until it is just a dot on the horizon. But this is not what happens, it is true that the vessel gets smaller but the sea starts to obscure the hull, then the sails until finally all one can see is the mast top which then disappears. This can only happen if the surface of the sea is curved as on a globe. He had even gone on to make an estimate of the size.

Oooooh. I’m intrigued as to what this ‘ammo’ is. I do hope they don’t actually admit it was all a hoax. That would be soul destroying. Not to mention the grief and ‘I told you so’s the internet would be full of! It would ruin everything!!

Re: Flat Earth Society

I was listening to a Flat Earther on the radio. I was slightly put off by the fact he started off as a famous Youtuber (not necessarily a group you would associate with massive intelligence), but as I follow a few Youtubers that actually do seem to be quite intelligent, I was willing to disregard that feeling, and, I feel, approach the interview with an open mind.

In short, I believe that all available evidence says the earth is round, but was willing to be proved wrong.

What I got was a man who, when asked how the water didn't fall of the edge of the earth, replied that there was a thousand foot tool Game Of Thrones style wall of ice around the planet.

When asked what happens when you fly around the earth, when happens when you get to the edge (bear in mind that planes can easily go above 1000 feet), he replied you disappear from one side of the disc and appear on the other (which sounded like the warp tunnels in Pac Man), and when asked for evidence, cited the fact there are apparently holes in GPS coverage for large chunks of the southern hemisphere (although he didn't call it that, because a hemisphere requires a globe)

Apparently, the fact that there are large holes means that no one knows for sure where each plane is while in one of these holes. Now, while I am not a pilot, I'm fairly certain Pilots have other, admittedly less accurate, methods of navigation available than GPS, and I'm fairly certain the plane doesn't just vanish off radar when it hits a spot with no GPS.

I went into the interview of the opinion that while I think the earth is round, I was willing to be proved wrong. I came out of the interview still thinking that, but also thinking the interviewee was an idiot.

Dude111 26-09-2018 19:24

The earth IS ROUND,no 2 ways!!

Unless its topography is like a Mobius strip, i.e. it folds back on itself, which is why you return to your starting point if you travel long enough...

No, I'm kidding, of course it's a sphere! The Apollo 8 astronauts saw it - they were the very first people to see our world in its entirety.

Unless of course the UFO nuts have it right and at least one abductee before Apollo 8 looked out of the window of the alien spacecraft...

Kidding again. :p:

Man (on TV): The aliens aren't coming. They're already here. They could be your friends, your family. They act almost normal, but something's off.

Jane: Yes - the TV. (turns TV off) If there were any aliens smart enough to come here, they wouldn't be stupid enough to come here.

Daria - There goes my trick ear again.
