The more I think about it if I had both why would I need VM XL TV package?

Because you'd have less choice, presumably.

A good viewing experience is all about quality, and to get the best of what is available, you need to be able to pick out programmes from multiple channels/apps.

I love Netflix, but even with the on demand services added, I still need the terrestrial and subscription channels to complete the range of choice I need.

Incidentally, Netflix is far better value than Picturebox, which is a joke in terms of quantity as well as quality and is only marginally cheaper!

That's what more and more people are starting to think , for many traditional pay TV is fast becoming a luxury they can live without. If your ok with waiting longer for shows to appear the streaming options offer decent value for money , especially if you already have a recordable terrestrial box.

One other option, rather than Netflix and Lovefilm, is Netflix used in conjunction with a service such as Unblockus, which gives you access to all the Netflix regions and their different content. At around £3 per month, Unblockus is cheaper than a Lovefilm subscription and I found that when I added Unblockus to Netflix, I no longer needed Lovefilm. Unblockus also gives you access to Hulu, so that you can watch all the US Network TV shows.

And, if you are like me and want the HBO content that only Sky Atlantic show, Unblockus allows you to subscribe to HBO Nordic at around £7.50 p/m. Unlike the Sky Atlantic available via Now TV, it has all the past seasons of the HBO shows and content from other providers other than HBO.

With these options, the need for XL does become questionable if you don't mind watching most of your viewing via streaming.

Yes, I think the Sky Movies channels will be seen more and more as an expensive option against the likes of Netflix, and I would also say that if Sky 1, Sky Living and yes, Sky Atlantic do not come up with better content soon, they will find their audience share slipping away.

I think the only way these channels will survive in the long term is if they improve content and/or reduce prices. Both of these potential solutions require a complete change of attitude by Sky.

denphone 08-01-2014 19:36

Re: Virgin TV (What's on soon)

Indeed the market is changing very quickly and Sky as the biggest pay TV provider will need to adapt very quickly because if they don't then they are likely to have a considerable erosion to their position in the market in the medium to long term..

Not everyone has the same tastes in shows what may be a good show to one person may be a rubbish show to another. There is no doubt Sherlock is a popular show but it's not for me and i'm out i'm afraid.

You didn't just state you didn't enjoy it - you said it was absolute garbage.

That is why I asked "in comparison to what?"

I can't stand period dramas like Downton Abbey for example but I can see the effort that has gone into making it, its popular and seems to have won awards.

"absolute garbage" infers its on a par with This Morning or Big Brother or My Big Fat blah blah blah.

News Just In Universal Channel Have Comfirmed That Season 2 of Bates Motel Will Return in April 2014 a Month after the Show Airs in America.

Thanks for the info fella.:)

In my eyes Ripper Street has been pointless after the first couple of episodes. It's stories became pretty boring and it seemed to have run its natural cause. Am not going to give it anymore time or money on BBC or other suppliers.

I could not understand which time period "Bates Motel" was supposed to be set in. The clothes and sets had a 60's feel (much like Pyscho) and yet they had modern cars, generally modern values and modern technology. It was also far from suspenseful or even fast paced. I gave up after 5 rather pointless episodes.

The less said about Heroes the better. It has clearly been a cash cow since the bad guy (was it Sylar?) survived after the end of the first series. It was poor script writing to just say "the bad guy survives". The whole first season was focussed on people finding out how kill to kill the bad guy. When they found the way to kill him, he magically survived. A strong team of writers would have killed the bad guy after the first series and found another bad guy for the next series. As stated before, a huge cash cow which leaves more questions unanswered than answered.

I appreciate many other people would have liked these series, and I understand content is subjective. The production and direction may also be acceptable enough but, for me though, these series are pretty pointless and some contain very, very basic flaws. Will not give any of them the time of day.

I hope others will continue to enjoy them though.:)

Interest was high until Sky messed about with it. As Karl Pilkington said "we've had the stone age, we've had the iron age , this is the peeing around age" lol. I'll just stick to watching it on cw site via my smart dns. I do feel bad though for uk fans who don't know about smart dns/torrents etc.

Not something I watch either, but some people do and understandably they will be very unhappy.

Yet another reason why many people are fed up with the current way of TV distribution (or lack of an alternative method to run alongside it). These shows are available easily via the internet and people are prepared to pay to view them; they just need an easy and legitimate way to do it. It's up to the content providers to find a way or inevitably face increased piracy.
