It seems both parties had a valid point. For me Hibs should of allowed BT to show the game without demanding a one off fee. Those of us who love the game were punished(or not as I have no idea what the score was or whether the match was good or bad)

Oh god imagine if bEIN sports get some games off the next PL auction along with BT sports and sky sports with a much reduced allocation. BT sports would cancel their deal with VM for BT sport in XL package as they'd want more money. bEIN sports would charge for PL games too and sky sports would stubbornly refuse to reduce their prices quoting "inday volleyball rights and a host of new sports..."

Everyones prices would go up. Sky sports would be banging their drum excitedly for meaningless sports and "exclusive rights", Michael owen would be smirking and rubbing his hands on BT sports with in his inane and awful commentary and on bEIN sports richard keys and andy gray would ride back onto our tv screens on magnificent white stallions proclaiming some tacky line such as "sport and football will never be the same!"

Oh dear.

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

Here is the latest news on Sky Sports 5.

http://www.theguardian.com/business/...5-broadband-bt

BSkyB falls on Sky Sports 5 launch and free broadband offer
Investors sell satellite broadcaster and rival BT after plans for new channel emerge

BSkyB has launched a new attacking move against BT but seems to be scoring a bit of an own goal as far as the City is concerned.

The satellite broadcaster has unveiled Sky Sports 5, which will show European football, but crucially, customers who sign up for the new channel will be offered free broadband for two years. The move seems designed to take on BT's growing presence in sport as well as attempting to attract more broadband customers to Sky.

The move has damaged the share prices of both BT and BSkyB. BT is down 11.4p at 394.7p while BSkyB is 12p lower at 864p. Analysts at Berenberg issued a sell note on BSkyB, saying:

We do not see the [new] channel as a driver of customer growth or upgrades, but regard the aggressive broadband offer as confirmation that Sky is upping the ante against a resurgent BT.

The new channel will be the home of European qualifiers, Champions League, Spanish and Dutch live football, plus a host of associated content. The most important, clearly, is the Champions League, the rights for which BSkyB has for only one more year. From August 2015, these rights will be exclusively held by BT: we expect the company to focus on using these rights to further drive market share gain and revenue growth in its consumer business.

With only Dutch football being incremental to the existing offer – the other rights were already held by BSkyB – we do not regard the new channel as likely to drive either upgrades to Sky Sports, or incremental TV customers. However, with customers required to register for the new channel (from 12 June), this gives BSkyB the opportunity to sign up households to its latest broadband promotion: free for two years.

As highlighted previously, BSkyB's average revenue per user has flattened out, despite record new product sales. This reflects increased discounting. The latest deal is more aggressive than usual, however, being two years rather than one. Another current offer is for half price TV + free broadband for a year. We thus expect Sky to continue to post strong broadband adds, even if the financial benefit does not come through.

We retain our sell rating and price target of 680p. As indicated in previous research, we see the company as under pressure in its TV business as a result of accelerating rights cost inflation, while the maturity of the broadband market means that Sky must either face lower gross margins or declining market share. In our view, the plan for "Sky Europe" indicates that management, even if not admitting it publicly, understands that the UK business is under pressure.

Could that explain the free Sky BB for 2 years for Sky Sports customers and the promotion of a new European football channel , if there's any truth Sky Sports 5 would have considerably less football 2015 on. We'll have to wait and see all rumours at this point wait for an official announcement.

How does BT being restricted on bidding top dollar for sports rights - which is what the article says - result in higher sports auctions and higher prices for consumers? Do you mean because BT will probably have to charge its customers for its sports channels and not bundle them with its fibre broadband?

Yes, the same thought did cross my mind but then I thought BT's lawyers probably have put in a get-out clause for that scenario.

BT are already charging customers who are willing to pay for it though, surely?

If BT win the rights and have to charge customers for PL football, I imagine it will still be cheaper than Sky are charging currently. I know Sky have more sports to offer, but I know a number of people who do not watch golf, tennis, rugby or cricket and only have sports for football. Those fans should, in theory, save money as BT can offer the football at a cheaper price due to the lack of other sporting rights they have not paid for.

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/n...hts-spree.html

"The inclusion of BT Sport means that any extra spending, which currently costs £246m per year in Premier League football rights alone, could force the company to reduce the wholesale prices BSkyB and TalkTalk pay for broadband, or increase its own retail prices. BT Sport is already due to become much more expensive next year when it begins spending £300m per year on exclusive right to European club football."

I like the following comment from a disgruntled BT customer:

"As a BT Broadband customer, I resent absolutely that some of the extortionate charge I pay for broadband is being spent to deliver BT Sport for free. I am not the slightest bit interested in sport. I resent being forced to pay for it. I am not alone. BT's competitors are looking more and more tempting."

Why do they broadcast on both channels when they have five red button channels!

Even buying homes or games shows is better than Tennis.

+1 :) the same as golf as it is good walk ruined

I agree regarding wimbledon and it`s disruption of the tv schedules. My argument with it is why not put all the matches on BBC2 and BBC3 only leaving BBC1 free to show the normal schedule

The reason why they put all their sport on BBC 1 is because it pads out the schedule quite considerably on BBC 1 and thus that's why they won't change it.

That's now largely covered by BT Sport so you may well be saving money compared to NASN days. Of course, it's not identical coverage but I think sometimes it's too easy to see the past with rose-tinted spectacles.

NASN and ESPN America were both dedicated US Sports channels and showed all the major US Sports the exception being NFL however a selection of games could be had FTA on Channel 4 to get your NFL fix.

ESPN in its current form lacks some of the excellent magazine shows that were available on both NASN and ESPN America of course I'm happy BT still carry the US content however the NHL hasn't been available for a while owing to the fact Premier Sports have the rights which is a shame as ESPN America had excellent hockey coverage.

Indeed. Is a complete myth there would be decent other shows on Wimbledon fortnight if it was on a sports channel....

I've read elsewhere that the NHL were asking stupid money for the UK rights so it was not even remotely viable for ESPN or Sky to consider buying them. Premier Sports decided to acquire them and since then everyone has lost out. The sport has achieved an even lower profile than it had before and Premier Sports has lost money on the deal.

It was ESPN themselves who closed the channel.

http://www.theguardian.com/media/201...espn-bt-vision

"The telecoms company will continue to broadcast at least one ESPN-branded channel after the deal's expected completion date of 31 July, as part of its BT Sport package. However, ESPN Classic, which is not part of the BT deal, is expected to cease transmission across Europe, the Middle East and Africa."

As Chad has said, it was ESPN who closed the channel. Basically because viewing figures had declined and this was attributed to people watching this type of content when they felt like it through services like YouTube. Being a unique channel is not a guarantee of profitability.

Sky Sports season ticket now available from VM

You get 6 Sky Sports channels with 2 available in HD – plus BT Sport, ESPN and Eurosport, also available in HD. All you have to do is add a 10-month Sports Season Ticket for £150 upfront

This gives you a saving of £122.50 over 10 months at the current price of £27.25 a month

that works out at £15 a month for 10 month cheaper that paying the £27 for SS a month wonder if they add the rest of SS HD channels when they go live as well
