BT fires opening shot at Sky in new Champions League rights battle.

To date Sky and BT have attempted to play down expectations of a bidding war, despite Uefa predicting the next three-year UK deal could go for as much as 30% more at about £1.2bn.

However, John Petter, chief executive of BT Consumer, who led the last bid, has admitted that BT has to hold on to the rights to continue to drive its pay-TV business.

Liverpool’s outgoing CEO said a threatened break-up of the Premier League’s collective broadcasting deal “is still being debated” in the boardrooms of leading clubs despite the current model generating more than £10bn between 2016-19. The admission will alarm other top-flight clubs, who share the spoils of collective selling at home and overseas, and critics who argue the competitiveness of the Premier League is what makes it the most lucrative in the world.

Well, something needs to be done to stop excessive money being made out of this at the expense of the punter, but they need to avoid chucking the baby out with the bathwater.

I would like to see all Premier League matches televised live, and distributed more widely to pay TV and the terrestrials. Unfortunately, if the clubs sell rights to their matches individually, I have a sneaking suspicion that prices will go up still further!

Agree with you mate. The top clubs like Man UTD,Man City,Arsenal,Chelsea etc would be able to demand and get hughe tv fees but smaller clubs such as mine Middlesbrough would really struggle, especially if they put on the sort of dreary defensive performance seen against Spurs at the weekend!
