I am looking to get a dvd writer for making backups :)

Anyway - I would obviously like these backups to be compatible with most dvd players.

So which format should I go for?

DVD-R
DVD+R

I have a limited budget - so cheaper is better... Any suggestions?

How about this:-

http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?PIO-106OEM

It's DVD-R & DVD+R

Yes i would well recommend the 106 i just got one (as i have previously recieved two faulty 105's) and they are good and have better compatibility. However do not go to Novatech as you can find them a lot cheaper at other places such as www.121cdr.com ;)

Does a DVD writer replace the cd writer or do you need both?

It will, however the CD write speed of a DVD writer generally isn't as fast as the current CD writers. Of course, if you're replacing a fairly old (and slow) CD writer, then it won't make much difference (and could be an increase in speed) - assuming you're bothered about the speed difference.

†¢ 4X DVD-R, 2X DVD-RW write speeds, 4X DVD+R, 4X DVD+RW write speeds

†¢ 24X CD-R, 16X CD-RW write speeds

Just 1 example from a sony model, not as fast as some of the newer cd writers but not too bad for a combo dvd writer \ cd writer :)

To compare all the different DVD formats take a look at this (http://www.verbatim.com/products/images/dvd_format_comp.pdf) PDF from Verbatim.

When you've read all that you may well choose to go the DVD-RAM route - in which case look at this (http://www.morgancomputers.co.uk/shop/detail.asp?ProductID=1097&CategoryID=99&SubCategoryID=128) cheap drive from Morgan Computers.

I can highly recommend the SONY DRU-500A does -R +R
I find -R media to be cheaper but that could be my supplier
My HP DVD only does +R which is a bind but seems to read -R disks created on my other PC

I've not managed to create a single coaster yet with either DVD writers, I have both CDR and DVD because the CDR writes at 52x and the DVD drives get nowhere near that.

I noticed on www.scan.co.uk that DVD drives were £70+vat (only -R mind) but could do DVD-RAM (If you take the disk out of the caddy!!!)

i prefer to use +R/RW discs, as i can get them slightly cheaper than -R/RW and as my dvd player will play both, doesnt matter.

i personally reccomend the Pioneer 106, i used the sony for a while, but found it sometimes spat out bad discs for no reason.

http://www.blankdiscshop.co.uk/acatalog/catalogbody.html

in the hardware section, also sells cheap discs.
