You are going to need a router as opposed to a hub or switch.

A hub / switch is a dumb device which literally connects the wires between the hardware and sends the message packets in the right direction. However the hub / switch cannot allocate different IP addresses to your PC / PS2, which a router does. Thus the signals from the PC / PS2 tend to clash in the modem and it cannot see what to communicate with.

A Router will connect the wires, one from your modem / STB into the router. Others from your PC, PS2 also into the router. Signals can now be passed between all hardware.

Crucially, the router is the only device seen by the modem / STB, which almost thinks the router is a computer. The modem cannot see the PC or PS2 on the other side of the router. The PC or PS2 are told to send signals for the internet to the router, and only sees the router. It depends on the router, excatly what needs to be configured to get it all to work.

As for choice of router, it depends whether you want to be wired or wireless. The Linksys range seems quite popular but indeed anyu of the leading brands should be OK.

Or you could just buy a second netowrk adaptor card for your pc, and set up internet connection sharing - its easy if you've got XP. The only downside to this is that you need your pc on when playing on your ps2.

A basic router should do you, say £50.00 Any decent computer shop should have something for you. Simply put you want one with one WAN port and 4 LAN ports, and the ethernet cables to connect your PC / PS2 to the router, and the router to the modem.

As for configuration, most will have wizards or a manual that should walk you through it. More information http://www.playstationpro2.com/misc/ps2_online_faq5.html

Most kits are pretty much straightforward with onscreen guidelines.
Netgear and linksys are good for routers and simple to set up most of the time.

I use a Linksys BEFSR41 to connect my PC & XBox to my cable modem.

V cheap, & v easy to set-up. Comes with a set-up CD with a "wizard" thing to guide you through.

Linksys BEFSR41 at Amazon.co.uk, only £40.89 (& free delivery) (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005KAC7/ref=sr_aps_electronics_1_1/026-4308561-3116426)

I bought this router from ebuyer

I just turned everything off, connected the cables, turned the power on to my sacm, waited for sync & rdy to lock, booted the router, and then booted both my pc's and hey presto, both online, when I want to connect up my laptop, I just plug the spare cable into it & boot it up and it's online, no configuring or anything.

I havent tried out the usb printer server tho :D

Peace Out
