China has banned a Norwegian-made PC role-playing game because it "smears" the country's image.

Project IGI2: Covert Strike violates Chinese regulations prohibiting games injurious to China's national dignity and interests, according to the State Press and Publication Administration (SPPA).

The PC game allows players to assume the role of a freelance mercenary - Chris Ryan - who has the task of tracking down illegal computer technology through Russia, China and Libya to prevent it falling into the "wrong" hands.

The game was created by Oslo-based Innerloop Studios and published by the British firm Code Masters.

According to Xinhua, the government banned the game because the country's flag and signs like "China Aviation" were scattered throughout the game's architecture.

The game has been around for three years and was updated last summer, according to Code Masters.
