The System Restore system for Xp uses a lot of disk space around 12% by default.

To use System Restore effectively - What is the minimum disk space I can get away with?

i would not touch it decreasing it would give you less restore points :)

3% should be ample that will free up about 3 gig of extra space and still allow plenty of choice of restore points.

You can gain even more space as and when you need it by taking the delete all bar the last restore point option should you need to.

As others have posted it is also well worth remembering that system restore is a favourite home for some viruses which explains the problem of repeat infections even with effcetive AV protection running.

In the event a virus is detected simply turn off system restore re-run the AV scan and then set a fresh restore point after a re-boot and final re-scan. Once that is complete delete all bar this last restore point and voila a fully clean system. :)

Hope this helps.

testcard, if you need to reduce the amount of space the system restore folders take, I would suggest you seriously look at getting a larger drive, because you are gonna start running out of space.

Disable system restore and use Drive Image or Ghost..............

disable system restore and learn about the recovery console.

That way you learn more about what caused the crash and how to resolve it..

I find it more satisfying to diagnose it myself than to take the easy option of rolling back.

system restore also makes it MUCH harder to kill a virus, as if the system rolls back then the virus can reappear
