Changing proxy and DNS server guide.

This is step by step to changing the VM proxy and DNS servers. The guide is split into two parts. DNS and proxy.

DNS Servers

DNS is way of translating a name into an IP address. For example when you enter www.hotmail.com into your browser your browser goes to 207.68.172.239 Every computer that is connected to the internet has an IP address. The DNS ( Domain Name System or Server) is simply a way to convert the name to an IP address. You would not be able to use the internet very easily if you had to remember IP address above instead of www.hotmail.com ! Bellow is a list of DNS servers. If you are having problems getting to pages then changing your DNS server may help. A list of DNS servers is bellow :-

VM - 194.168.4.100 / 194.168.8.100
BT - 194.73.73.172 / 194.73.73.173
FREESERVE - 194.152.64.34 / 194.152.64.68

There are many many more DNS servers out there and you do not have to use the above servers.

To change the DNS server on windows 95/98/ME :-

Double click on my computer then control panel. Look for an icon called network and double click it. You will see a list of network components. One of there will be TCP/IP followed by the name of the adaptor you are using. Example : TCP/IP Realtec Ethernet Adaptor. Double click on this entry and then click on the dns tab. Enter the DNS server of your choice into the two fields in this window. When you click o.k. windows will warn you that the settings may affect DHCP. Click yes to accept the changes. Once this is done reboot your computer.

To Change the DNS server on windows 2000/NT/XP

Look for an icon on the desktop called my network places. Right click on the icon and select properties from the list. You will see your connections listed. Find the connection that your cable modem uses and right click it, again select properties from the menu. Double click on TCP/IP in the list (usually at the bottom). On the window that appears you will see two fields top and bottom. On the bottom field will be two windows that may be grayed out. Click to put the dot in the option "Specify a DNS server" and these boxes should be white and allow you to enter the server. When you have entered the server numbers click o.k. on all the boxes. There is normaly no need to reboot the computer.
