Killing billions of fish (http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99994639)The researchers found that there were nine major hydrogen sulphide eruptions in 2001. The largest one smothered 22,000 square kilometres of ocean. "These events are not new - they are known from the turn of the last century," says Weeks, "but they were always understood to be very small, localised effects."

Scary, not to mention smelly!

Pooo!.
I remember hydrogen sulphide from my good old Merit Chemistry Set. "The Bad Egg Gas" they called it.

I seem to remember a report that eruptions like this could explain the disappearance of ships on a calm sea. A gigantic gas bubble wells up from the ocean floor and displaces the water to the extent that the ship loses buoyancy and just sinks in a matter of seconds!
