LOL.. did not mean it that way, sorry. I am just interested to see to what lengths people are going to customise, I have taken the short cut arrows off using tweakui and have taken the recycle bin off desktop with the same. I've also swapped the icons as you can see, I will be adding some scripts tomorrow maybe a clock and some data stuff, we'll see.:)

When you save the image in paint, save it as a jpeg file so that it is much smaller. You will then be ok to upload it on dial-up.

So if you click on this: http://www.harkphoto.com/gulf.jpeg

Next to mail is Route 66 UK & Ireland - the only route panner for Mac I've yet found. To the right of Photoshop is the Imageready app that comes free with it, a kind of slimmed-down photoshop with extra bits bolted on for preparing web graphics. To the right of that is Adobe Illustrator, and I haven't got a scooby how to use it yet :)

option-shift-3 takes the whole screen, opt-shift-4 allows you to select an area (these are the same as os9) or, go applications, open the utilities folder, and start the Grab appliction, which gives you further options.

Actually it's:

Command-Shift-3 = Grab entire screen to a file on the desktop
Command-Ctrl-Shift-3 = Grab entire screen to clipboard
Command-Shift-4 = Grab selection of screen to a file (cursor changes to crosshair)
Command-Ctrl-Shift-4 = Grab selection of screen to clipboard
Command-Shift-4 followed by space = Grab window to a file (cursor changes to a camera and highlights window/menu under cursor - click mouse on highlighted window/menu)
Command-Ctrl-Shift-4 followed by space = Grab window to clipboard

The Command key is the one with the Apple logo for those who don't know.

I can never remember which is 'command' and which is 'option'. As a matter of fact I normally think of them as 'alt' and 'apple', seeing as that's what's actually written on them ...

And I never knew there were so many more options!!

Quick question about samurize, why does my active script not work for free disk space? I can get everything else running fine, but this script shows as "not activated" or something.

down at the very bottom of the script options bit on the right you got 'drive space properties'. Have you selected your drive?

Yep done that, select C but I still have that message, and it is just showing my HD as 30 gig full, even though it's ony gt something like 6 gig on it?

The boxs at the bottom are for disc space, total, free, used and in what increments you want it displayed in, by the sound of it you have got total drive space set as the default :)

Hey, one for you mac users out there. One of the guys at work (a Uni) got a new 17" powerbook, and set the wallpaper as the fishtank screensaver. It didn't take up any noticable processor power, and all of the apps were running fine. From what I can gather, with a little 3rd party software, you can get any screensaver to run as wallpaper.

For what it's worth, my work mac has all of the previous and current Tomb Raider movie pics, randomly changing every 60 secs.

removing the names is very simple. simply delete the name then hold down alt and type 255. for the first thats ok but for the others you will need to type alt 255 2 times , 3 times etc so they are all not called the same. you must release the alt key between each repetition though. tweak xp has a function to remove the shortcut overlay as well. enjoy :)

You're right though, Apple gets away with murder. The Apple-designed digital media software that's bundled with them would have had the US supreme court in fits if it had been M$ bundling with Windows. And Apple has pushed Final Cut Pro so hard that Adobe has backed out of the market for Mac video editing to concentrate on a Windows-only version of its own software. Who would have thought we'd see the day?

Towny, what you forget is that mac is a proprietry system, unlike Windows/DOS/PCs... which are, in a sense "open source" where people can find snippets of code, and use standard programming techniques and applications for building programs. Where-as macs are owned by Apple, and in theory, like xbox, only allow "signed" programs to run, thus making it an Apple only machine.

Apple dont fall into the anti-trust sections of the US law, because its there technology to do with as they want.

Utter BS - there is absolutely nothing 'open source' about any Micro$oft product. Its source code is a very closely guarded secret. Apple's Darwin, on the other hand, is truly open source as you well know and have discussed in other threads. It's UNIX, for goodness sake ... it doesn't get much more open than that.

As for hardware, yes, Apple's hardware is proprietory, but then so is PC. The only difference is IBM have licenced their product; Apple by and large have not.

As for US anti-trust legislation, it is designed to protect against market dominance and has nothing to do with whether a product is proprietory or not. For a whole range of reasons (poor marketing by Apple in the 1990s being one of them) Microsoft has a dominant position in the desktop Operating System market. This leads to closer scrutiny of their business practices than for Apple, which has a comparitively tiny share of the desktop OS market.

When they finally teach you to read, notice i said that Windows/DOS/PC's are more "open source" <= notice the speach marks, go ask a parent what that usually means.

Windows has standard layers in which applications can run, and those systems are open for people to use with programming languages, Microsoft VS is still the most compatible environment for Windows, where-as borland does a good job, and works through some of its own layers, libraries and work arounds. UNIX isnt even slightly open source, Linux is, UNIX isnt... hence why SCO are suing everyone under the sun, its alot harder to program for Macs than PCs because there architectures are completely different, theres masses and masses of reffernce code for x86 structures, because its open, everyone knows it, microsoft have to conform to this in order to get things to run. Apples run on a system that is proprietry, like MP3... but in this case, most of the coding and technology isny avilable for people to access, even if you wrote a program for UNIX or Linux, it would work probabaly at best 80%... thats a generous number, but it wont work, if it did... there would be many people besides mac users using iTunes...

I would say that there is plenty of documentation available for the API's which make the job slightly easier, so long as you use M$ approved compilers and languages and there are plenty of snippets of code available making coding an app somewhat easier. However then you have all the fun of the instabilities, slightly different versions of API's and of course the DLL's.

It once took me 70 hours to code a serial comms app for a uP slave, all because MS decided you dont really need to access the serial ports.

VS is overpriced second rate bloatware, Dev-C++ is far better and includes GDB support which walks all over the so called MS debugger. Still dont get Electric Fence however :)

As for UNIX, well it gets messy. Linux is UNIX like, actually a development of minix and shares code with BSD. BSD is a genetic UNIX to borrow ESR's term and the source is freely available under a non-viral license. SystemV source code (TRUE UNIX if you must) was untill recently freely available and had huge amounts of BSD code stolen and inserted into it. UNIXware and Solaris, the two 'big' commercial unicies are closed source, however there has been the accusation by former SCO coders than unixware is full of GPL code, especially the linux personality layer. Solaris shares characteristics with linux and includes some LGPL code seperate from the OS itself, eg the desktop.

AIX is a completely different kind of UNIX created by IBM, which was only able to be called UNIX via the license from Novell and later transfered to SCO(who BTW are now a band of fraudsters).

Apple still win however on design.

Also, amusing to see after i post a picture of the 3rd Age of Middle earth, Gandalf pops up ;-) White or Grey?
http://www.annalsofarda.dk/Annals-of-Arda/Maps-index-tables/Maps.htm has some nice maps.

The Maps arent bad, still no Arda :(

also, has anyone actually got the UKTV script to update properly? Mine tends to stall and stop updating sometimes.

I had to re-set my script to make sure it was pointing to the right text file, apart from that no problems. What settings are you using?

Very nice ... And an alias for your apps folder in the dock too! Why didn't I think of that?

*adds it for this evening's todo list*

I see from your SBOD that you're still using osx 10.1.x ... you should get 10.2, it's way better, especially if you have an older iBook - you'll notice a significant increase in speed.

Here's my latest work desktop - photo is the Trifid Nebula, courtesy of Hubble.

Clever way of sorting files out.

Yeah i should really upgrade to 10.2, but 10.3 will be out soon so i may aswell wait for that.

I thought everyone added there apps folder to the dock, lol

Take a screen dump (use the print screen key on your keyboard) then either attach the file to your post using the option below the Your Reply window, or upload it to your ntl webspace and put the URL within your post.

open paint and go to edit > paste. then file > save as the picture, save it as a jpeg. there is a button to attach it somewhere when you want to upload it here...
