I have received latest bill from ntl this morning.(I have been a customer for ten years).I noticed several consecutive and rather obvious 0845 and 09010 and 09013 fixed rate nos. That I havnt knowingly Dialled. An overall extra payment of about £7.50p not a lot but my usual telephone charges for the month are usually between £5 and £7 pounds for the whole month so I have doubled my bill in 1 day.I access internet via 600k Broadband.I off course phoned customer services who were very helpfull and credited me with about £4.00 worth of the calls.I was told it was something to do with Pop Ups on the Internet redirecting me to paying sights.I pronounced quite clearly that I dont visit those kind of questionable sites and was told that you dont have to visit those sites but you get redirected there. She suggested a Pop Up stopper.I said I already use the best one going also run Ad Aware Spywareblaster etc;.I was then given a phone no to ring to try and find out who ,where and what I could have been inadvertible dialling up.I have rung a couple of times but only get engaged signal. I have been racking my Brain trying to think what I could have done in the last few days that was differant than the last five years of problem free surfing. And then it dawned on me Winamp.I downloaded Winamp after accessing the BBC 7 website who recomend it for listening to their Digital radio service. After downloading their Program I found you could access streaming video content (not Porn). You can say what sort of content you prefer. (Adult Family content etc)I started to flick through the various channels and found a retro tv station I liked with old BBC content Fawlty Towers to the manor Born etc.I acsessed different music channels as well .I think I have Hit the proverbial Nail on the head and have deleted Winamp and hope that sorts out my problem with the unknown numbers. As anyone else come across this problem any advice etc

To be certain your PC is not dialling out, simply disconnect the modem from the phone socket........... Its not needed (unless 600k fails)

These 'pop-ups' change your dial-up number to premium rate one. As you are on broadband rather than dial-up, this cannot be the cause of your calls.

Another instance of CS jumping to a conclusion before listening to the customer!

Hmmm-if your computer hasn't made them, then your line has.

The problem here is that it becomes hard to prove that they weren't made by you/someone in your house (unless you can prove you were elsewhere when the calls were made, in which case ntl have no option but to reimburse you)

i know it wont solve what has happened but ask ntl to put a block on these numbers now before it happens again :)

sorry , just reread your post and how , if you are not connected through dial up could it be anything to do with winamp ???????????????

HI Paulyoung666
Thanks for your help I cannot think that I have done anything different only to install Winamp
when you start to stream the video content Winamp redirects you to whoevers website. When you think about it you can be redirected to any Tom Dick or Harrys website .Who then can do whatever may be possible to do :wavey:

No worries, at least you know now, but as someone said earlier-it would be worth contacting ntl & asking them to bar premium rate numbers on your phone.

The NTL call logging software is not infalliable. I had 2 instances of phantom calls. First time It happened it was a 0870 number, and CS refused to refund me, as I cannot prove I didn't make that call, it was only 7 pence so I let it go. Second time it happened my whole family was not in the house and we can prove it, so CS refunded me, it was the same 0870 number. I had nothing but my phones connected to the phone line. That was about a year ago and it has never happened since.

:notopic: But how will this work for ntl down the cable. Will we see micro (or not so micro) charges on the bill in place of the call costs?

This is probably a question better asked in the CR3 thread.
