Last week I received a letter from NTL saying that in my area they are going to re-route some cables (at the request of the local council) and that there will be a total outage (TV and Broadband) starting tonight (27th) at 11pm and finishing tommorrow (28th) at 8am.

What I want to know is whether I can get compensation for loss of service.

If it's less than 24 hours then not usually. Plus it was given fore-warning.

I think it is limited to a small area (probably within or around TS17 postcode).

Guess we'll just have to get a life for a few hours then Cyrill :D

Bit of a bummer if you are a shift worker and 11pm-8am happens to be the bulk of your peak TV viewing/internet time.

They probably have it all set up ready to switch over and we might only have a short outage during that period (says me hopefully).

doubt it - read the T&C's they are pretty much bullet proof

I got the letter too, and I'm in TS5 which is Linthorpe in Boro. Net went down at 10pm exactly here!

When i totally lost my BB 1meg service for three solid days (through no fault of my own) i phoned up NTL Customer Services & asked about compensation i was told that if i wanted compensation for the time i didnt have BB access, the way its worked out (30 days divided into £34.99 or however many days in that month i lost service)

Yes, but the outage mentioned above is below 24 hours, which usually doesn't qualify for anything unless you get a really sympathetic agent. Try, I guess.

But it's not of ntl's doing - they've had to move these cables because of the council - complain to them, and get them to give you compensation!

Most important is it worth asking for compensation taking into account the running around you will have to do?
NTL could turn round & say that they notified you in advance of the outage & as such they are not required to pay compensation.

My connection went down at around 11pm and was back up this morning by the time I booted up at around 8.30am - so I can't complain really.

I just went to bed early! ;)

Kind regards,

My connection has been spot on again today following whatever it was they did last night. I must admit, in my area I've had very few problems in the 30 months I've had the service.

Hey Flubflow... where are you in TS17? Are you on Ingleby?

Cheers,
