so what do you think of valentines day? has it lost it's meaning? should we only celebrate our love for someone on this day?

sorry i know it is another thread on love :sorry:

and if you do part-take in the day, got anything romantic planned?

i think its a bit of a waste of time to be honest - if you are in love with someone that love should be all encompassing all year round, not just on one day.

but thats just my view :)

Lets face it guys, despite the comercialism, the one big advantage of V Day is it gives us a fighting chnace to show we can be romantic even if we have to pay through the nose to establish it.

Any other time of year being "Nice" can lead to the "What have you been up to?" or "what are you after?" responses. LOL

:romance: :luv: :romance:

Mark's post sums it up for me too. :)

BTW anyone voting in favour of Valentines Day should admit whether they own/run a card shop or a florists. ;)

I have been single and very happy most of the time for a few years now. I think Valentineâ₠¬â„¢s day is something thought up by the card and flower industries just to make a lot of extra money, especially as florists triple their prices at this time of the year. I know it is nice to let someone know that you love them but why wait until Feb 14th to do this?

Valentines Day is great, a bit expensive but. I get to go to a fancy restaurant, eat fancy food, drink whatever I please and get somewhat 'spoiled' for taking the time to buy her a token of my affection (in addition to paying for the restaurant :D) what more could you ask for?

I take it from that you won't be asking anyone to marry you this leap year Valentine's, then ;)

Valentine's Day was fun when I was young & single, when you got cards from people and genuinely didn't know who had sent them.:)

Sending a card to a partner, though, especially a long standing one, is meaningless, imo. As has been said there are much better ways of expressing your feelings for someone, all year round - and can be done as a surprise, not 'expected'.:p

<edit> - just seen the poll results - we're a romantic lot aren't we ;)

Maggy

It's over commercialised and it's lost it's charm.

I think the days when people made their own cards and troubled to pick their own flowers it actually meant something. However now BIG business takes it out of our hands and almosts bullies us into participating.

So if anyone is going to do something for a secret valentine -can I suggest actually making your own offering would go down well with the girl of your dreams(provided she isn't one of them grasping gold diggers) especially if you plan in advance and you make it as well as you can and it's tailored to the recipient. :wavey:

Starting 5 minutes before you are due to hand it over is as bad as not bothering however.;)

Incog.

i am romantic, and i voted romantic, however i think that if you love someone then you should show it all the time, but valentines is a good excuse to go that extra mile :naughty:

leap year.......that reminds me one of my work collegues is apparently going to ask her fella to marry her awwwwwwww

i agree with coggy here, when someone does something for me that is from the heart, hand made maybe, then it means more to me than something bought five minutes before they see me, because they have forgotten..... but on the otherhand, anything from the one you love is a good thing, seeing them and spending time with them is just as important as being bought something, imo

despite the commercialism of most celebratory times, valentines day can still be special for people who want to do that something a little special 'out of the norm' if you will say........

although if i ever got in to a relationship, id proberbly be romantic most of the time, but i guess ill never know. :(

so yes i picked option 4 in the poll :(

St. ValentineÂÂÂà ‚´s Day

Which day?
February 14

Earliest Observance?
Middle Ages

Demographic Practice?
Worldwide

Describes the celebration of St. Valentine's Day from pagan festivals to present-day activities.
No one is quite sure exactly who Valentine was. There are at least three and possible eight different Valentines claimed to be the real romantic. The three most likely Valentines were all church martyrs. One was killed with a group of believers and the other two, a priest of Rome and a Bishop of Interamna, beheaded by Emperor Claudius II in 269 A.D. The remains of one of the Valentines is said to be in the church of St. Praxedes in Rome.

There are several legends regarding Valentine. He was said to have been imprisoned and while there, cured the jailer's daughter from blindness. Yet another story has him falling in love with the jailer's daughter sending her a letter signed "from your Valentine." However the most likely origin of Valentine's day goes back to the Roman Lupercalia, a feast celebrating the God Lupercus. During that feast, young women would put their names into a box from which young men would draw. This matchmaking process would then enamor the two youth until the next year. Associating the matchmaking feast with the martyrdom of Valentine was convenient because the days were almost identical.

Sending love notes on Valentines Day occurred much later. Charles Duc d' Orleans, while imprisoned in the Tower of London, supposedly wrote amorous poems and letters to his wife in 1415. Valentine love notes gradually increased in popularity until their mechanization in 1840. Since 1840, Valentine Cards have become tremendously popular all over the world.

Valentine was a priest in Rome at the time Christianity was a new religion. The emperor at that time, Claudius II, ordered the roman soldiers not to marry or become engaged. Claudius believed that as married men his soldiers would want stay at home with their families rather than fight his wars.

Valentine defied the emperors decree & secretly married the young couples. He was eventually arrested, imprisoned, and put to death.

Valentine was beheaded on February 14th, the eve of the roman holiday Lupercalia. After his death, Valentine was made a saint & as Rome became more Christian, the priests moved the spring holiday from the 15th of February to the 14th, Valentines day. Now the holiday honoured Saint Valentine instead of Lupercus.

Actually the wording is a little backwards for me the sadness is in not having a special someone to love rather than being sad for not being loved myself (if that makes sense). But then when did love ever make sense it wouldn't be love if it did I guess. LOL

Any way for what it's worth I sticks me hand up and says, "one was me" cos it was closest to my own situation.

So thanks for the hugs RR all donations gratefully received. :)
