a trojan horse is spreading via email, and is claiming to be a microsoft windows xp update

The program, known as Xombe or Dloader-L, arrives as an executable attachment in spam e-mail messages purporting to come from windowsupdate@microsoft.com and installs itself on victim's computers when users open the attachment.

The spam messages read in part, "Window [sic] Update has determined that you are running a beta version of Windows XP Service Pack 2. To help improve the stability of your computer, Microsoft recommends that you remove the beta version of Windows XP SP1."

It's been said many times - Micro$oft do not send out patches/fixes/service packs in emails - you always need to connect to their site. Always remember this tell your friends - best form of protection going.
