Yes, I was going to suggest that as well. I liked their performance tests, it analyses your system, compares its performance against similar systems, and gives you tips on what tweaks you can use to enhance performance. Not security related, but still a very useful tool...

It may be a good idea to start a new thead for this specific problem.
Also add as much info as you can.
Type of firewall if any,
AV software.
Are you on Broadband or dialup. there is almost always some activity on BB connections even if you are not using it for any reason.
Does your PC display any other problems?
Do you run Adware or spyware checkers?
Is there anything showing up in Task Manager that is suspicious?

jeffguo, if you post any further info in this thread you may get more replies.

Zen Internet has signed an agreement to offer Prevx Home as a free download to protect customers from the increasing number of attacks bypassing traditional anti-virus software and firewalls. The agreement †“ which may come as a wake-up call to other service providers †“ offers users protection from joining the growing number of Internet connected PCâ₠¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s attacked and hijacked by hackers and fraudsters.
Zen Internet (http://www.zen.co.uk/Default.asp?headlineid=3749) are offering their customers Prevx Home (http://www.zensupport.co.uk/knowledgebase/article.aspx?id=10379) <-- link provided :) Those of you who dont know about Prevx it protects against malicious spyware, hackers, Internet worms, viruses, & Trojans..

You dont have to be a Zen customer to enjoy this free download.

I guess I need to spend some time trying to configure it if I am going to keep it. At the moment it is flagging warnings all the time, when my AV is auto updating, when I am uninstalling a program etc, once it starts warning you it is very difficult to get rid of it. At the moment it is very annoying but I will persevere for a little while longer.

I don't post here often, so I hope nobody minds me adding my input to this topic. :)

I'm sure some of you may be familiar with the strategy of blocking various ad/spyware/etc sites in the Hosts file (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm), but the more experienced computer users are probably also aware of its limitations [if a site has stuff on various subdomains you have to have an entry for each subdomain]. DNSKong (http://pyrenean.com/?page_value=-1) gives you a bit more flexibility on DNS-based site blocking. Although it doesn't offer wildcard functionality, in the sense of being able to replace characters with a *, it does let you put in just 1 [or more] "words" [I forget the correct term] of a url. For example, you could have an entry like spammysoftware & it would block anything like ads.spammysoftware.com, banners.spammysoftware.net etc, but wouldn't block banners.spammysoftware1.com. It's not ideal, but it's considerably better than the Hosts file method.

A few things I should mention about it though:

The logging function doesn't automatically chop off the beginning X no. of lines when the log gets to Y no. of lines long, so if you want to use the logging feature then it's a good idea to check on it every now & then & empty it once it gets into 6-figures [number of lines, I mean]. It can be a bit heavy on a browser [which is how it's viewed by default, DNSKong sends it to your browser when you use the tray icon command to do so] once it gets that big, though you could manually view it in a decent text editor (http://www.pspad.com/en/).

There used to be a link on the pyrenean site to various filter sets for DNSKong, though the link appears to no longer work. DNSKong does come with a couple of sets of filters, but saying they're a bit out of date would be an understatement. All is not lost though, as I make my own (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/alien42/dnskong_filters/?M=D), based on the well-known winhelp2002 hosts file (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.txt). Admittedly, I don't update my filters as often as that guy does the hosts file [though I've just finished updating them today], but then due to the nature of how DNSKong works my filter blocks more than his does anyway. :p:

If you go to the site of a business that you know is legit, but either the entire page or maybe just it's images won't load, it could be because the site uses the Akamai (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akamai) caching service. There are a lot of legit companies who use Akamai, but there are also a lot of advertising companies who use them as well, so my filter has all Akamai servers blocked by default, though a few legit 1s are listed in the pass filter. If you want to use my filters, you can either do what I do & unblock [by adding to pass.txt] as necessary, or just remove the relevant entries from named.txt & replace them with the full/specific URLs of Akamai-hosted adservers from the original hosts file.

Comodo Internet Security has just reached Version 3.9.xxxxxx

The Hips has certainly become a great deal more user friendly with whitelisting and trusted vendors(digitally signed stuff) plus buffer overflow protection.
Also the Anti-Virus has come on quite a lot with Heuristics and BOClean now integrated into it. Plus it`s free.

http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html

If you do give it a try, during install there is the option to install "Safesurf" for buffer overflow protection along with the "Ask" toolbar :td: just untick the three boxes (opt out) as it`s not needed now, BO protection is built into Defence+(the HIPS)

Comodo Time Machine, does the same sort of thing as Roll-Back Rx or Ay Recovery. I.e. Creates snapshots of your system which you can go back to if you delete something or install something you don`t like. Then your system is back to how it was when the snap-shot was taken.

Doesn`t work with RAID or even if you just have a RAID controller but don`t use it
Also has some issues with imaging software, messes with the mbr :(

Forgot to say it`s free :tu:

Comodo Internet Security version 4 has recently been released, you can download a copy from here http://www.comodo.com/home/internet-security/free-internet-security.php?entryURL= just make sure to select Free Download where you will install a downloader. Here you can choose what to download.

Remember if installing to untick the opt-in box for Hopsurf (if you don`t want it).

Has it improved and is it easier to use?

Well yes it now has an integrated Sandbox which is not really a sandbox as most know it (sandboxie style) but anything it doesn`t recognize is given limited priveliges until it is allowed by the user or confirmed ok.
The AV component is slowly getting better and this release is a lot more user friendly.
The main gripe i have is the default setting (Internet security) allows all traffic out but blocks incoming. You need to change to Pro-active to stop this.

You certainly get a lot less meaningless pop-ups :p:

You tell me if it is behaving?Because I had no end of trouble with the last update and had to go looking for a removal tool.

Mind I only run the firewall.

Matty_
27-09-2010, 14:48
It certainly behaves fine for me, but i do have a pretty good knowledge of the product and use the full suite.
The only things i have seen is a couple of issues with Avasts webshield.

Personally Maggy if you are just going to use the firewall, i.e. no Defence+ or Sandbox (which isn`t like sandboxie) then personally i think if your behind a router using vista or 7 then the standard firewall with a decent av should suffice if your a safe surfer.

One thing i will say is this version went through a much better beta/RC testing process with a better bugzilla tracking formula.
The sandbox part can take a bit of getting used to, it basically flags unknown/unsigned trusted vendors executables in a partially limited sandbox using job objects, if you know the software is safe you can easily move it to Trusted files.

If you do decide to give it a go, i`ll try and help as much as possible if you have any issues...

Can I ask what are peoples opinions of the free Microsoft security essentials.

If your pretty safe on the web and don`t download cracks, keygens, warez, etc then MSE should suffice. Lots of people are using it now and the trouble is when something becomes so popular the malware writers make sure that said AV doesn`t detect their vile.

No AV will catch 100%, some are better than others at catching new stuff, MSE does miss a lot of the newer malware!

For a simple set and forget program it excels, with not many extra this and that`s to confuse you. ;)

Can anyone recommend a firewall that will compliment Avast! Antivirus.

Currently I use Comodo but I am not too sure about it so any help would be appreciated.

I've installed it but I have no idea how to test if comodo is working.

I was using Outpost that popped up to let me know when an application on my pc was trying to launch/connect to the net and informed me when a threat was blocked - Is there anyway to make Comodo behave similar to that?

It is an extremely good Firewall.

Open up the main Comodo window(Summary tab) and where it says FIREWALL on the main screen(not the tab) you can change the settings by clicking to the right of the word FIREWALL next to the green square then select Custom Policy with the slider.

I have FIREWALL set to 'Custom Policy' and DEFENSE+ set to 'Safe Mode'.

Thank you, changed it to those options and I am getting the pop-ups I desire :)

http://free.agnitum.com/index.php Agnitum Outpost Suite free, launched on monday - a few less features than the Pro version, but with a VB100 certified (well, decent rate of passes) antivirus and a firewall, it's a strong contender in the free security stakes.

EICAR test file is the safest way to check your AV is working ok on websites you visit: https://secure.eicar.org/eicar.com.txt

Should get blocked by your AV.

Nice to see my Norton Internet Security removed the EICAR download virtually instantaneously. What is in that thing!!!!! :D

At least i know my AV is working even if I do only have it installed as it came as a 60 day trial with my new laptop.

Thanks for the link Qtx, bookmarked for future use when I decide which AV to use. :tu:

Avast didn't stop the download, but it detected it as a threat from a manual scan.

Is this not the same test file that has been around for many years now? I remember references to it before 2000.

Then Avast is not checking websites as you visit them, which is unusual for AV's these days. It probably just checks files as they are accessed instead. This gives a lower overhead on your computer which can stop the AV slowing down lower spec pc's. This kind of protection is not as good though as a drive-by exploit could overwrite the memory space of an already running process with a dropper which then downloads the fully monty trojan. If Avast detects it at boot up its ok but until you shutdown the computer you could be infected. SO many scenarios though!

Yeah it has been around for donkey years. Sort of an industry standard for simple AV check.

This is what is in the text file: X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EICAR_test_file

You can paste that line in to notepad and save it to get your av to test it too. If you like fiddling, you can do that and add/change a random letter in the file to see if the AV still detects it. Hackers (not really the term I would use) often use a cryptor to avoid AV's but many times they can just Hex-edit a single part of a virus to make it undetectable if they are lazy.

I did do a little researching after I had had such a quick response from Norton and saw the line of gobbledy gook. What did strike me was, seeing how long ago the test had been written - 1999, why it was still an industry standard for testing AV installations. Do newer virus threats still use the same old programming tools. Probably worded that wrong but I hope you get my drift. :dunce:

Its only a check to see if your AV is working as expected rather than testing how good it is. The fact its just a text file means it is safer than trying to test the AV with a newer real virus. If the EICAR text file doesnt get caught by your AV for whatever reason, nothing bad happens. If you tested with a real virus, you would get infected.

Probably not the best way of explaining it from my side either lol, but hopefully you get the drift too :D

Aside from the fact it was posted 13 years ago, they are not "online security and antivirus scanning tools" anyway.
