so on the one hand we have the government saying how
we should use cars less etc

then on the news they have them banging on
about the biggest ever sales of new cars
as if it was some sort of success

Aye... they still want us to own the cars, just not to actually use them. Buy them, insure them, tax them, mot them, but have them sit in our driveways while we get the bus.

Obviously the twice a year new registration thing hasn't worked, as that was supposed to ruduce sales of new cars

I thought it was supposed to reduce the "peaks" the sales reached when the new registration was released?

IIRC, companies where complaining they couldn't manufacture enough cars to satisfy this peak..

Oh yeah, but ultimately would this not ruduce overall sales, as those people who "need" a newly registered car every time a new reg comes out will be less willing to pay twice a year

all it does is to have people drive around for one day in the year - a bit like a flying ant

thinking that they are "King for a day"
with their new number plates

Well, yes, but a split personality, 'twas ever the way of British governments. Taxation on one pan of the scales and morality on the other; we all know which weighs the most.

Smoking is bad for you but they won't stop cigarette adverts.

Expressing concern about drinking but encouraging happy hours and large numbers of alcohol licences in city centres.

Tut tutting about gambling but loosening the laws on casinos.
