Does a shortcut exist or would someone write me a :
shortcut to the Volume / Mute feature that exists on the taskbar. I would like this so that I may create a keyboard shortcut eg. Cntl - Alt - M to mute music quickly if say the telephone rang.

Thanks for advice. Paul suggestion of using shortcut with mute.exe would have been the favourite. But it doesn't appear to exist in XP. Am I right?

Yep there is,
Download mute.exe
Right click it and send to desktop as shortcut (or create a shortcut to it anywhere you want)
Right click shortcut
Properties
Click shortcut tab
Create shortcut key

(You need to create a shortcut to the program itself to create a shortcut key for it as far as I know)

Right I am really stamping my feet now! I acnnot find it using search, please tell me what folder it is in. Maybe it just doesn't exist in my XP set up because I havent installed some elements. What do you think?

You took it right, I'm a p**t. I shouldn't need you to hold my hand at my age, but many thanks for your patience.
I have put it in Prog. Files, copied a shortcut to Desktop and created a keyboard shortcut Cntl - Alt- M (what a clever sod I am) and it works a treat.
Another thing will this only mute PC speakers or would it also mute my AV speakers if I rig them up to Digital Output of sound card, cos that will really be handy.

Should mute all speakers I think.
Don't worry though you are'nt a p**t, I failled to make it clear that you had to download a program from the link.
Glad it's working for you though:)

One last question, was it from memory, or index in PCWorld.com that you gave me that tip.

just found this little prog here (http://www.freewarefiles.com/results.php?categoryid=6&subcategoryid=75) sound control v2.15

with it you can allocate hotkeys for mute and volume control
