I got a new cellphone today. After one year on a dinky Sony Ericsson T200 with Fido, I finally decided to take Telus up on their offer. You can bring your Fido phone in, with its charger and a phone bill, and they will give you a brand new phone for free. They will match the existing rate plan of Fido, or you can pick a Telus rate plan. They match everything: the monthly fee, minutes allowed, per second billing (they usually do 6-second billing), all the features, even the long distance charges in Canada and the United States.

Anyways, I'm very happy. I got the LG 4600 phone.

It has a 65K color display. It can surf the web (1X network, speeds are 144 Kbps), and send messages to IM clients such as MSN messenger and Yahoo messenger. It has voice dial, polymorphic ringer and all the standard trimmings. Trimode (1900 and 800 MHz CDMA digital, 800 MHz analog) is quite nice.

The phone is 3G ready. When you go online the 3G icon lights up. Connection speed is usually 144 Kbps. There are no per MB fees, and it doesn't use airtime. It costs one pence per webpage that you view though.

Next step is to hook it up to the laptop. I want to see if I can play a simple game of Half Life or something and how the latency is. Maximum download speed is about 18 kb/s.

The drawback of this phone is that it won't work in Europe or Africa. That doesn't bother me though. Its not like I will need to use it there. It works just fine in the United States, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Caribbean, and other countries that have CDMA networks.

We don't have Telus or fido in the UK, so it doesn't mean much to me.
Nice phone BTW
