Hi Everyone,
I ahve telewest broadband and up until now have not had a problem with the service, however i have found that when i try to connect to IRC servers (any) or anything through port 6667 i cannot connect.

This is nothing to do with my home machine as i am a computer technitian and have tried all the troubleshooting parts.

I am guessing that either the modem that is supplied with Telewest blocks those ports, or Telewest themselves have blocked the ports? Can anyone confirm this or give some advice?

Thanks,

Rich

have you installed anything else recently that may use that port?

You tried your PC around a friends house? Are they on a different providers connection?

Do you have ZoneAlarm Security Suite?

It's most likely your firewall issue and not Telewest, as at this moment I'm connected to 2 IRC servers on port 6667 and I'm on a Blueyonder Elite package

If you haven't tried the PC against a different connection how have you properly eliminated the PC from the equation? If you try it round your mates and all ports work then you may be right in pointing the finger at TW but until you try it against a different connection you will not know for sure.

Contrary to popular opinion, ISPs don't go round blocking random ports for random customers.

Maybe you're typed in the server name incorrectly?

Simple test, find another IRC server and see if you can connect to it.
Try telnetting to the desired server on port 6667.

Should look something like this:

aa@bluepoint ~ $ telnet nomad.blabber.net 6667
Trying 64.49.239.1...
Connected to nomad.blabber.net.
Escape character is '^]'.
:nomad.blabber.net NOTICE AUTH :*** Looking up your hostname...
:nomad.blabber.net NOTICE AUTH :*** Found your hostname
^]
telnet> q
Connection closed.
aa@bluepoint ~ $

to rule out your installed OS , just download burn and boot a linux livecd with Xchat on it and try that, i assume you can ping the server and it exists at the time you tryed it.
