I used to watch my uncle operate illegally 23ish years ago on the ham frequencies and on CB. I caught the bug, went to University to study electronics, but never got round to doing the ham courses.
My uncle finally did his M3 last year, now in his 60's and a little more sensible!
It was the kick I needed and I finally did the three courses back to back last September, finishing in April.

You will only need to re-apply for the licence and get the same callsign. If you wait until Oct, I think its free.

Everyone seen the new laws coming in in October? No more /P /M or /MM use, it will all become /A.
Log book no longer required as well (I'll still keep one), tho I think thats delayed for a while.
Not sure if 10m band is opened up to M3's tho, hope it is.
Licence becomes free except to those unable or unwilling to use the internet. A friend can do your renewal however.

I have "been away" from the amateur bands for over a decade now. As a G6 (on 2m & 70cm) there have obviously been changes.

Can you give more details and / or point me in the direction of further info.

Thanks.

DI think from a brief read this site will be the best to consult.
http://www.ofcom.org.uk/radiocomms/ifi/licensing/classes/amateur/faq/#content

However as I see it, as a previously licenced person, you will register and then be OK to use your previous callsign. See you further down the log, you don't have to keep!

There doesn't seem to be much info on the RSGB site ATM regarding licence changes.
However these days G8PZI you can use the full HF to microwave spectrum given your previous qualifications. And these days the licence renewal is going to be free, as long as its online!

Thanks for the information. Looks like I've got to do a lot of background reading! However I do find that on the RLC site, that "B" amateurs can operate on the HF bands. Thats a big change (and shows how behind i've got).

That is just what I needed to spark interest in the hobby again. I lost interest when a lunatic in my area, who had a grudge against Radio Amateurs, constantly broadcast the "Laughing Policeman" over anyone trying to communicate. After six months I gave up, then shortly after moved house. I just didn't get around to putting up an aerial.

Strangely though (perhaps with premonition in mind) I didn't ever stop paying the fees to the RA latterly RLC.

Obviously I may have to prove my existance for the new licence, one of the ways is a copy of the entry into the call sign directory.

Could someone tell me if i'm still listed?

Thanks

Steve - G1YMC

Cheers

Dan

Ah, the reason why I refused to buy anything from Evsham Micros!

PS: Yes your callsign is still listed, I can PM you a link if you want?

If you are at the same address, you have some rather large trees in your road.

The information available is scary when you know where to look, try mine use google earth and you will see a very messy garden. lol

I never knew radio hams use 'cq' as a call as well - I thought it was just DXing cb users

CB'ers borrowed that from radio hams.

I'm not sure when it was first used, but I heard many years ago it was something to do with "Seek you" when looking for a contact.

Perhaps that is just an old wives tale though. (sorry old Hams tale):D

I had to just Google that one, didn't know what you were on about.:dunce:

SOS was first used in morse code by the Titanic to report a real distress.

Another interesting one, I can't remember if DX CB'ers used 73's as a goodbye? But in Germany they used to use HH, some said as a salute to Hitler. Amateurs were banned from signing HH, so many used 55 instead.

H is 4 dots, and a 5 is 5 dots.

Not sure if that myth is true either.

I will take my anorak off now and stop boring everybody with myths.

If you follow the link there is one, albeit American, definition of 73's which the authour insists should be 73, NOT 73's, see what you think !

Anyone remember warming up the shack with 2 X 807s' in push pull, its all coming back to me (giving my age away now)

The link doesn't work for me for some reason, but I remember being told that 73 is already a plural. ie: Best Wishes.

So 73'3 is like saying "Best Wisheses" :D

807's your behind the times, I warm my shack with a pair of 3-500z's. More than adequate for 400W pep.:D

And notice that guy refers to the term "Lids" at the bottom of the page.

Thats one I have heard a lot on the air, You get the Italians/Greek/Middle East pronounce it like "Leeeds" (Meaning idiot or similar) I wonder where that phrase/word originated from?

With the most recent being this thread >> http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/22/33686162-cbing-and-ham-radio-21st-century.html

Probably best to use the latest one..

Worryingly, I did :p::o: I even knew that 'CQ' was a Ham term and not a CB one; originally at least :)

I might have quite liked being a Radio Ham but the exams (and cost thereof) put me off. Plus the cost of the gear, of course!

(Sorry. Didn't realise how old this thread was :D)
