View Full Version : Telewest 4mb to 10mb
Hi guys,
im onthe 4mb broadband package and phoned up today to see if i changed to the 10mb if i would have to spend a year on it, they said only 30 days. i was thinking of upgrading but will i actually get 10mb? or is it how far away from the exchange i am i have no idea how cable works.
i can max my 4mb at the moment.
ps. if needed im in WF2
Thanks
You will get 10mb to the Telewest "exchange", however internet conditions may prevent you getting 10mb all the way to the site you're downloading from. Give it a go, and go back in a month if you don't think its worth it.
Nice one thanks mate, will give it a bash :p

if you mean the test here then you should be able to get over 8mb when i was on telewest the test wasnt very good but use a down loader for files and it pushed way passed the 10Mb speed.
cool what did you do to test that?
I ran these tests http://fuller.zen.co.uk/test/
and they started at 1300 then soon dropped to hight 700's to 800 :dozey:
Try http://www.speedtest.net/ from the London server.
8238 from their. going to try on my mums pc less stuff running
mum gets 9500 lol guna do a spyware check

Well according to speedtest my connection is 3mb but if i the speed test from this site http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/speed.php then i get 3.8mb. so you might not have spyware allow doesnt mean i cant get full speed but normally only on newsgroups :)
You might have web filtering enabled on your software firewall. If i turn that off i get normal results on webpage speed tests. :)
i have no firewalls active i do have a router on the network but my mums pc is getting better resuls than mine, also i have run a spyware scan. bit weird il try that other test above

nope those speed tests are out buy about 10% also speedtest.net said my speed to America was faster than London if its right i should set up a proxy to the USA.
edit= O the browser does effect the speed result.

Hehe it's probably because more UK people are using the Speedtest than anybody else as they seems to be a strange breed that are obsessed by the speed of their Internet Connection... Did somebody say Penis Extension? :) My 4MBit suits me fine

I think all this 10 mb service is a bit of a con anyway, even if you did max out, a lot of the websites have resticted bandwidth anyway.

It's not all about websites. And my 10mbit performs far better on webpages than my sisters 2mbit.

your upload speed is what makes the difference faster the upload the sooner the web site starts sending data to you

sorry m8, just to clarify,
did telewest upgrade you for free to 10mb? or did you pay extra to your current supscription fee?

Save yer money and stick with 4meg : 4meg and 10meg have the same upstream so in my opinion 4meg is better as you are capped @4meg you are less likely to saturate your upstream.
Ask yourself these questions :
* Where are you going to be spending this extra download bandwidth ? It can't be p2p as you already have the same amount of upstream and so will not gain too much... Ahhhh could it be a news server or other high availabilty source ?
* If so - it currently takes you ~3 hours to download a DVD but you want it an hour and 15 minutes - sounds cool : but after 24 hours you have downloaded near 18 DVD's and burnt 60Gigs of disk space - ask yourself do you really want to be spending your time sorting data and money on disk storage.
Personally I had 2 dedicated download machines - both high spec (they had to be) so that they could unrar / compress files without effecting download speeds.
Now that I've happily downgraded to 2meg I can do without that kind of grief and thinking how big a disk to buy.
 Peace
